- Devil’s Purge, the AR Doom-like, is out now on the iOS App Store
- Mixing Pokémon Go and first-person shooters, it tasks you to exorcise hordes of demons
- Utilise spatial AR to duck, dodge and scope out enemy weakpoints
As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say that Devil’s Purge is a breath of fresh air in the gaming world. Having had the privilege to get hands-on with this game during my recent trip to Lisbon, I can confidently say it’s a unique blend of AR and first-person shooters.
If you’ve never known the genre of “Christiancore” then you certainly will now. Lisbon-based developer ONTOP has announced that their new AR shooter Devil’s Purge is out now on the iOS App Store. And guess what? When I was in Lisbon, I actually got to go hands-on with this new, frenetic, demon-slaying shooter!
In essence, Devil’s Purge isn’t exactly like Pokémon Go with firearms; a more fitting comparison would be calling it a solo Virtual Reality shooter game. Remarkably, ONTOP has incorporated real-world positioning into the game, allowing you to navigate based on the actual positions of enemies. This means you can dodge, weave, and even find concealed weak spots, just as if you were in a real combat situation.
In this game, Devil’s Purge, I found myself battling countless enemies, each one more challenging than the last. The bosses are inventive twists on classic Christian mythology, making every encounter feel fresh and exciting. And let me tell you, facing off against the ultimate villain – none other than the Devil himself – as the final boss, is a chilling experience. Plus, the game’s heavy-metal soundtrack by various indie bands adds to the intensity, making this as close to Doom as we’ve come in an AR setting so far.
Purgation manifest
During my recent visit to Lisbon, I was thrilled to try out Devil’s Purge. What made it even more intriguing was learning that the team at ONTOP had collaborated with local priests to incorporate Christian landmarks around Lisbon into the game for power-ups. Although the intense shooting might not appeal to everyone with religious sensibilities, Devil’s Purge could potentially offer a more accessible “hardcore” experience in AR for mobile devices compared to previous options we’ve seen.
