As a fan with a keen eye for rising stars, I can confidently say that Sydney Sweeney has proven to be one of Hollywood’s most astute and agile performers. Her journey from a $65,000 indie drama role to securing a whopping $7.5 million paycheck in just under a year is nothing short of breathtaking.
One surprise hit movie can still supercharge an actor’s trajectory.
Last December, I found myself starring alongside Glen Powell in “Anyone But You,” Sony Pictures’ hilarious romantic comedy that turned out to be an enormous box office hit, raking in a staggering $220 million on just a budget of $25 million. It was quite a lucrative role for me, as I earned a cool $2 million for the movie.
Approximately one year after, in October, Sweeney earned a $7.5 million paycheck for his role in the Lionsgate thriller titled The Housemaid, which will also feature Amanda Seyfried and be helmed by Paul Feig. This information comes from several sources reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
It’s uncommon for significant leaps to occur in contemporary Hollywood, particularly when it comes to financial compensation for roles outside of franchise films or pre-set increments for A-list stars. However, Sweeney has managed to establish herself as one of the most sought-after actresses by strategically selecting a diverse array of projects, such as a boxing biopic and a drama set in Hollywood’s past that explores the romantic involvement between Kim Novak and Sammy Davis Jr.
A significant portion of the earnings from the substantial back-end profits that Sweeney received due to the success of “Anyone But You” (estimated to be in the millions) came from the royalties. Additionally, it’s reported that she was paid a $250,000 executive producer fee.
The actress played a crucial role in securing the movie’s production too. It is reported that Sweeney initially accepted a supporting role in “Madame Web,” which falls under Sony’s Spider-Man-focused film series, as a means to facilitate the production of “Anyone But You“. A source revealed, “She wanted Sony Pictures to understand that she was willing to collaborate.
Despite the less-than-successful run of ‘Madame Web’, Sweeney managed to earn a substantial sum from that film, raking in approximately $750,000.
Prior to starring in “Anyone But You” and “Madame Web”, she had already played the lead role in a biopic titled “Reality”. This film depicted the life of whistleblower Reality Winner. It was an independent drama that was acquired by HBO, and later released on Max approximately six months before her breakout romantic comedy hit the screens. Sources claim that she earned $65,000 for this project.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that the actress earned $250,000 from the horror film “Immaculate,” which premiered in March by Neon. Interestingly, she was also one of the producers for this suspenseful thriller.
Sweeney has become one of the highest-earning actresses of her generation due to the ‘Housemaid’ agreement. Notably, her ‘Euphoria’ co-star Zendaya made a reported $10 million from starring and producing the tennis drama ‘Challengers’.
