Stevie Nicks on Waiting Until 70 to Vote: “I Regret That, and I Don’t Have Very Many Regrets”

As a gamer with a deep appreciation for music and its power to inspire change, I find Stevie Nicks‘ recent revelation about her voting regrets truly resonates with me. Like many of us who grew up listening to her songs, her words carry a sense of wisdom that comes from a life well-lived.

Stevie Nicks talks about the one major mistake she made in her life, which was not casting a vote in a U.S. election until approximately six years ago.

76-year-old musician recently had a conversation with MSNBC about the significance of casting votes in this critical election, expressing her regret for not becoming politically active sooner.

As a seasoned gamer, I’d always skipped out on casting my vote until I hit the big 7-0. Looking back now, I wish I hadn’t. For the past two years, I’ve been expressing this regret on stage. I deeply regret that choice, and honestly, there aren’t many things I regret in life.

Nick started sharing her reasons for postponing her vote and her belief that others have done the same. “You might say, ‘I was busy, I had other things to do.’ But in reality, couldn’t you spare an hour? Couldn’t you find an hour in your day to cast your vote,” she reminisced.

The “Go Your Own Way” singer emphasizes that this election is crucial, as women’s rights are at stake. She expressed, “Regardless of who wins, we must find a means to reinstate Roe v. Wade.” Additionally, Nicks has declared her intention to utilize her influence to advocate for significant issues and inspire other artists to do the same.

During the late 50s, 60s, and even into the 70s, it seemed like every artist was composing protest songs. Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Stephen Stills, and myself included. My advice to all my fellow songwriting poets is to pen some tunes about current events, just as I did.

In September, Nick’s song “The Lighthouse” was released, which she started composing a few months following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. This track draws inspiration from the struggle for the preservation of reproductive freedoms.

In “The Lighthouse,” she croons, “They’ll seize your spirit, they’ll seize your might / Unless you rise and reclaim it all / Strive to foresee the future and be enraged.” Essentially, she’s saying that what you possess is being taken away, and you don’t have much time left to regain control.

Nicks stated, “Regardless of who emerges victorious, it’s crucial for the lighthouse to continue guiding vessels away from the dangerous rocks. To me, that’s what makes the lighthouse a guardian, safeguarding all the boats and ships approaching it.

She ended by addressing those unconvinced about the election’s importance, “Let’s not give up. Let’s continue discussing it.

On the 11th of September, I proudly declared my backing for Kamala Harris on Instagram, following closely in the footsteps of Taylor Swift.

Just as Taylor Swift so beautifully expressed, now is when we should investigate and pick the candidate whose views align with ours. We have only 54 days left until the election; ensure you’re registered to vote! Your vote in this election might be one of the most significant actions you ever take.
