As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Quentin Tarantino‘s taste in films is as unique as his directing style. While I have immense respect for the visionary Denis Villeneuve and his epic Dune movies, it’s refreshing to see Tarantino finding joy in Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux. His comparison of Phillips to the Joker himself is a testament to the anarchic spirit that both characters embody, and I can’t help but chuckle at the irony – the man who brought us Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill is praising a movie for its middle finger to Hollywood! However, it seems Tarantino isn’t as keen on revisiting other iconic stories like Ripley or Shōgun, which is understandable given his extensive filmography. I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree on those classics, Quentin. After all, there’s room for everyone’s taste in the vast cinema landscape – even if it means watching a Joker sequel more than once!
It’s tough to envision anyone loving “Joker: Folie à Deux” more than Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” movies (2021 and 2024), but that’s how Quentin Tarantino feels. The esteemed filmmaker, who won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in both “Pulp Fiction” and “Django Unchained,” recently shared his affection for “Joker 2” on the podcast hosted by Bret Easton Ellis. However, it’s worth noting that Tarantino also expressed no interest in watching the highly-acclaimed dramas “Ripley” or “Shōgun.” During his conversation with Ellis (according to World of Reel), Tarantino stated this during their interview.
I’ve watched David Lynch’s Dune on more than one occasion, but I don’t feel compelled to revisit the narrative. I have no desire to watch the spice worms or a film that emphasizes the word ‘Spice’ so dramatically. It seems like we’re constantly getting new remakes these days. When people ask if I’ve seen Dune, I respond…
In a podcast led by the well-known author behind “Less Than Zero” and “American Psycho”, Bret Easton Ellis, Quentin Tarantino revealed that neither Netflix’s “Ripley” series nor FX’s upcoming “Shōgun” epic would make his list of highly recommended shows. Tarantino communicated this to Ellis directly.
Did you catch Ripley or Shōgun? I’ve asked that before. Here’s the thing: There are multiple Ripley books, so why remake the same one that has been done twice? I’ve watched the story twice already, and I didn’t enjoy it in either version, so I’m not eager to see it again.
If you were to tell another tale similar to Shōgun, I might consider it, but my interest is already satiated from watching it back in the ’80s for all 13 hours. Regardless of how creatively they reinterpret or present it, or even if they were to transport me back in time using a time machine, I’m not interested as I’ve already experienced that story.
Quentin Tarantino ‘Really Liked’ Joker 2, ‘Tremendously’
Quentin Tarantino’s films are considered among the greatest ever produced. Despite not expressing any interest in exploring the universe of Arrakis as depicted in Denis Villeneuve’s critically acclaimed Dune movies, it seems he is missing out – a pity indeed. However, surprisingly, the creator of Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill has shown enthusiasm for Joker: Folie à Deux. In an interview with Bret Easton Ellis, Tarantino expressed his admiration for the film, saying “I really, really liked it, really… I loved it a lot, immensely.” Furthermore, during the same podcast and in a separate story posted by World of Reel, he even likened the director of Joker 2 to the notorious Batman villain.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but see Todd Phillips as the Joker behind the scenes. Just like our favorite chaotic clown, he’s directing this movie and spending studio money as if it were his own playful trickery. And that unexpected surprise? The jack-in-the-box prank during a handshake, which sends a shock instead of a friendly greeting? That’s straight out of the comic book geeks’ world!
Tarantino continued by saying:
Phillips is essentially giving a middle finger to everyone involved. He’s flipping off the movie audience, Hollywood, anyone who owns stocks at DC and Warner Brothers… In essence, Todd Phillips is the Joker. His film is indeed like that of Joker, no doubt about it. He is the Joker himself.
The Joker sequel “Folie à Deux,” which just began its theatrical release on October 4, can now be rented or purchased on VOD platforms like YouTube. Fans can pay $19.99 to rent Todd Phillips’ collaboration with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, or buy it for $24.99, although it seems unlikely that many people would spend so much. However, the DC film is still playing in cinemas for those who prefer watching movies on a large screen.
