Sony CEO Confirms The PS5 Pro Was In The Works Even Before The Base PS5

As a long-time PlayStation enthusiast who has journeyed through countless generations of consoles, I can’t help but feel both excitement and trepidation as the PlayStation 5 Pro looms on the horizon. Having spent a considerable chunk of my hard-earned savings on each new console release, I find myself wondering if this time, I might have to dip into my retirement fund for a shot at the $700 dream machine.

Story Highlights

  • The PlayStation 5 is Sony’s ninth generation of home video game consoles, released in November 2020.
  • The PlayStation 5 Pro is an upcoming upgrade of the base console, boasting a set of enhanced features.
  • PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino has revealed that the company started working on the PS5 Pro first.

Starting in early November, there are whispers that the enhanced PlayStation 5 model, or PlayStation 5 Pro, might make its debut. Intriguing details have emerged from an interview conducted by Variety with PlayStation CEOs Hideaki Nishino and Hermen Hulst. When they were asked about the release strategy for the Pro console and who it’s intended for, Nishino shared some insights.

As a devoted PlayStation fan, I can tell you that we’ve come a long way since the last generation. The lessons we learned from the PS4 Pro have been invaluable. When we marketed the PS4 Pro alongside the standard PS4, an impressive 20% of our customers opted for the high-end, premium model. This wasn’t just about hardcore gamers; it attracted a diverse range of users, even newcomers to PlayStation, who were drawn to the PS4 Pro experience.

Hideaki Nishino stated, “We commenced developing PS5 Pro before the initial launch of PS5; it represented a five-year endeavor for us. We had discussions about whether to continue with another ‘Pro’ version. However, the crucial point was that there are technologies we can develop and refine over three or five years.

In this scenario, Nishino represents the company and expresses that they consider the PlayStation 5 Pro as the preferred console for their platform. Essentially, if someone is considering switching to PlayStation, they might opt for the Pro model over the standard one. However, the decision ultimately depends on the price, as some people may or may not be willing to invest in a $700 console.

After the launch of the PS5 Pro, the subsequent sales reports and analysis will likely provide clarification on its performance in the market. However, it’s widely known that Sony doesn’t anticipate the Pro version to be a significant seller.

The enhanced PlayStation 5 model, dubbed as PlayStation 5 Pro, is scheduled for release on November 7, 2024. Pre-orders for this anticipated device are already underway, gathering interest and revenue from various global markets. As of now, games such as God of War Ragnarok, Lies of P, Dying Light: The Beast, and many others with Pro-enhanced features have been confirmed to grace the console. Additional titles featuring these optimized specifications are expected to follow.

It’s been whispered that all significant Xbox games, including upcoming titles like Fable and Gears of War, could potentially release on the PS5 and PS5 Pro. This strengthens the argument for players to stick with the PlayStation ecosystem, as Microsoft’s gaming division seems to be leaning towards multi-platform releases or even abandoning exclusivity altogether.
