As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of cinematic exploration under my belt, I must say that the recent surge of zombie-themed productions has been nothing short of thrilling. Having witnessed the rise and fall (and rise again) of this genre, I can confidently attest to its enduring allure.
Yesterday, the controversial zombie thriller “Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End” was launched on Prime Video, and it’s quickly gaining momentum, climbing to the number two spot on the Top 10 list in the United States. Directed by Carles Torrens and adapted from the novel by Manel Loureiro, the movie follows Francisco Ortiz as he fights to reunite with his family after a worldwide outbreak transforms many into ravenous undead beings craving human flesh.
According to Flix Patrol, the film “Apocalypse Z” currently holds the second position, having been released on Prime Video just 24 hours ago. It can be streamed by Prime Members. The movie premiered earlier this year at the 57th Sitges Film Festival in Spain and has generated mixed reviews among critics. Some on Rotten Tomatoes find it to be a fresh take on an old concept, providing complete entertainment, while others view it as a well-acted but predictable zombie thriller that fails to reach its full potential.
Interestingly, “Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End” currently leads another freshly released film generating much excitement, namely the documentary titled “Megan Thee Stallion: Her Personal Story“. This documentary reportedly offers an unparalleled look into the life of the artist, who has ascended to become one of the world’s most popular rap stars. It demonstrates that even in today’s world, horror continues to captivate audiences, regardless of its origin.
2024 Has Been a Great Year for Zombies
Apart from the acclaimed release of “Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End” in 2024, we’ve also been treated to a variety of remarkable undead films. One such film is the Philippine thriller “Outside,” which debuted on Netflix on October 17 and has garnered considerable acclaim so far. Among these, Zelda Williams’ “Lisa Frankenstein” is arguably the most noteworthy. This film was written by Diablo Cody, who also penned “Jennifer’s Body,” and it takes place in the same fictional universe as her 2009 horror movie.
This year, television has been captivated by zombies, especially with the debut in February of the sixth spin-off from The Walking Dead universe, titled The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. Notable characters Rick Grimes and Michonne, played by Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira respectively, returned to our screens in this series. Additionally, we’ve seen the second season of another popular spin-off, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, now known as The Book of Carol. This show has been receiving positive feedback too, and currently boasts a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
As we move forward towards 2025, I’m excited to join the ongoing fun with “Crawlers,” a story that depicts the United States facing a zombie apocalypse, forcing survivors to seek refuge in Mexico. Additionally, the long-awaited third installment of the “28 Days” series, titled “28 Years Later,” is on its way. This film brings back director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, along with star Cillian Murphy. It’s no secret that zombies have always been a popular trend in Hollywood, and if “Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End” is any evidence, the zombie genre continues to be a powerful force in movies.
