As a seasoned movie critic who has seen more films than I care to count, it’s rare that a new action flick catches my attention like Aftermath does. The unexpected duo of Dylan Sprouse and Mason Gooding have undeniably made their mark in the genre, and if this is just the beginning for these two, we’re in for quite a ride!
Thanks to the sensational new film “Aftermath”, two unexpected action stars have risen to prominence: Dylan Sprouse and Mason Gooding. For both actors, this could just be the beginning of their promising careers. Sprouse is most famously known for his role on the Disney Channel series “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody”, while Gooding gained recognition in the “Scream” franchise as Chad Meeks-Martin, the nephew of Jamie Kennedy’s character, Randy.
Following the events, Sprouse portrays Eric Daniels – a war veteran battling PTSD, who finds himself and his young sister stranded on a bridge besieged by homegrown terrorists under Gooding’s command. Directed by Patrick Lussier, this nerve-wracking, action-packed thriller is filled with gun battles and explosions, echoing the style of ’90s action movies you just can’t get enough of. MovieWeb recently interviewed the duo (pictured below) to talk about their experience venturing into the genre for the first time. Sprouse expressed that stepping into a leading role felt incredibly organic, despite initially struggling to visualize himself in such a part.
“It’s so, so, so much fun. Honestly. I will say, and I’ve said this previously, if you were to ask me five years ago if I thought I would be leading an action movie, I would give you a hard no, because I just always saw myself as more of a silly, geeky guy. But in that way, I think, it has trained me to be a physical performer in a lot of ways. So the marriage of all this stuff I grew up loving – which was sword fighting with my brother, and going outside and shooting off airsoft guns.”
One enjoyable aspect of Sprouse’s experience during the filming of Aftermath was working alongside Gooding, as they were friends prior to production. Having a friend by his side made him feel more at ease, and this comfort has led him to express a strong preference for continuing in the action genre.
As a cinephile, I’ve always harbored a dream of starring in a film as spectacular as this one. The fact that my co-star was someone I’d known since before the cameras started rolling in Mason, a friend whose talent I knew would shine brightly alongside mine – it feels like fate. If given the chance, I’d dedicate my entire acting career to action films. I mean, when you’re learning from real Navy SEALs, grappling, and firing airsoft guns, it’s as if all my wishes have come true. What more could an actor ask for?
Aftermath is Just the Beginning of Sprouse and Gooding’s Action-Packed Future
Following the completion of “Aftermath”, Lilly and Gooding are all set to collaborate again in the upcoming action thriller, “Under Fire”. In this movie, they portray two undercover agents who are unaware of each other’s true identities. They must work together to navigate a lethal ambush at the Mexico border. Directed by Stephen C. Miller (known for “Werewolves”), this film has a comedic undertone that sets it apart from their previous collaboration. When asked if this is the beginning of a lasting friendship on set, Gooding enthusiastically expressed his readiness to work with his friend again whenever given the opportunity.
I’m really looking forward to it! Working with Dylan on any film project would be a joy. Under Fire is merely the start; we need to make Under Cover and Under Duress as well. Bringing Dwayne Johnson into the mix sounds great too. There are plenty more films in our future, buddy. This is just the beginning for us.
I’m hoping he’s correct, since Sprouse and Gooding share an incredible on-screen chemistry. If they get more opportunities, it could result in some entertaining films in the future. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this collaboration takes off, but for now, don’t miss their action debut in “Aftermath“.
