As a dedicated follower of John Oliver‘s enlightening and entertaining political satire, I find myself deeply moved by his latest segment on Last Week Tonight. With the presidential election just around the corner, it’s heartening to see him take a firm stand, urging viewers to consider the importance of voting for Kamala Harris, despite any lingering frustrations or disagreements.
John Oliver‘s Last Week Tonight has hit YouTube early ahead of tomorrow’s presidential election.
The section lasting 14 minutes, where Oliver expresses his concluding opinions about the election, was uploaded to YouTube after it aired on HBO during Sunday evening.
In this part, Oliver urges spectators to cast their votes for Kamala Harris, specifically appealing to liberal voters who may have felt discontent with the Biden-Harris administration’s approach towards Israel.
“Look, I get why this is so difficult, and I know there are some who won’t vote for Harris under any circumstances because of this issue,” he said. “But for what it’s worth, I’ve been moved by some Muslim and Arab voices who’ve also wrestled hard with this question and arrived at the conclusion, despite their pain, to vote for Harris. In Arizona, a coalition of community leaders issued a letter in which they explained their decision to support Harris, saying a Trump win would be in extreme danger to Muslims in our country, all immigrants, and the American pro-Palestine movement, and they’re not alone in feeling that way.”
Oliver went on to say: “It’s not uplifting to admit this, but politics often falls short of our aspirations. It’s more about transactions than ideals. Frankly, I wasn’t thrilled about the first vote I cast as an American citizen being for Joe Biden, but that’s the reality we face.
Oliver expressed his excitement: “There’s one more thing I eagerly look forward to happening on Tuesday – if Donald Trump loses this election, he’d essentially be out of the game. He’ll turn 82 next time and I believe he’d retire… And isn’t that delightful? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to reside in a world where he’s no longer a danger, just a nuisance? … A world where he can rant about ice cream machines and gripe about windmills, and we all have the freedom to simply ignore his antics altogether? I long so much for such a world, and I hope everyone does everything they can in the next 48 hours to make that world a reality.
The action aligns with Oliver expressing his dissatisfaction with HBO’s conventional four-day-delay online release schedule in a September interview with The New York Times. He stated, “It’s incredibly frustrating to me… I was not happy with it at all.” He added that he values the ability to reach beyond HBO subscribers through YouTube, which he finds crucial. He also expressed gratitude for YouTube’s willingness to release the segment post-broadcast, even if it wasn’t immediately after the show as they had always done. In light of this, the choice to release early is quite logical given that the content may no longer be relevant by Wednesday.
