As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersing myself in the fantastical worlds of video games, I can’t help but see Barry Keoghan‘s life as a gripping RPG (Role-Playing Game). From battling a flesh-eating virus to navigating the treacherous waters of social media trolls, his journey is filled with epic quests and formidable challenges.
Barry Keoghan candidly discusses his feelings of discomfort regarding allegations of being an uninvolved parent, steering clear of peculiar acting opportunities, and the controversial Saltburn scene, which he unequivocally states was not altered in any way.
On season three of “The Louis Theroux Podcast”, an Irishman had a chat with well-known British radio host Louis Theroux. The episode featuring Keoghan, who’s known for his roles in “The Banshees of Inisherin”, “The Batman” and the upcoming “Peaky Blinders” movie, will be accessible on Spotify starting from November 5th.
Keoghan shared with Theroux that he avoids roles that appear villainous and instead aims to demonstrate versatility by playing diverse characters. He also expressed a desire to move away from unusual roles. Reflecting on his career, he noted that subtlety can be more effective, as viewers can tire of seeing an actor too frequently. Taking inspiration from actors like Daniel Day Lewis and Christian Bale, who are selective in their projects, he’s learning to approach his own work with caution.
In Emerald Fennell’s novel “Saltburn”, a character played by Keoghan deceitfully gains entry into an aristocratic British family and gradually eliminates them. As a result, he acquires their vast property. The climax involves him frolicking nude through the mansion to the tune of “Murder on the Dancefloor” by Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
Theroux commented to Keoghan about the scene: “There was speculation that your appearance might have been altered,” to which he responded: “No, not enhanced? It was all natural. I didn’t give it much thought. I would find it odd if it didn’t fit the narrative. I recall conversations with Emerald, and it began with my wardrobe, and she said we just needed to emphasize ownership.
When inquired about his unique look, Keoghan additionally expressed that the remarks made about his appearance are “truly appalling.” The performer admitted to scrutinizing comments about himself on social media: “It’s disheartening to single out someone based on their appearance, particularly on platforms like TikTok.
It’s possible for individuals to create videos, criticizing you harshly by stating things like, ‘I don’t find his face appealing,’ ‘He seems strange,’ or ‘He looks malicious.’ Such scrutiny can be quite intense. Fortunately, I have a thick hide to handle such criticism. It’s disheartening to see people behaving this way, especially when they judge others based on a movie appearance and tear them apart online.
In relation to social media discussions, Theroux inquired about the allegations labeling Keoghan as an absent parent regarding his son with ex-partner Alyson Kierans. It’s said that he’s currently linked with American singer Sabrina Carpenter now.
Keoghan stated, ‘If I didn’t possess a resilient disposition and the fortitude that comes with it, I wouldn’t be in this position.’ He explained that his upbringing has undeniably influenced his parenting, given that he lacked a model to follow. People often misinterpret this as indolence when they say, ‘He’s using his past as an excuse for being an absent father.’ However, Keoghan clarified, ‘I am not an absent father. It’s just that people like to use my son as a weapon or tool of some sort.’
He mentioned that with increased public focus on him, he’s shared fewer updates about his child. Essentially, he feels it’s unfair to expose his child online.
He added, “Since I managed to keep it under control, people create a story and say ‘absent father, unresponsive dad, or worse things that I won’t even mention. The gall of some individuals, it truly appalls me, infuriates me.
2021 saw actor Colm Keoghan contract a flesh-consuming virus prior to filming The Banshees of Inisherin, an ordeal he described as being close to fatal. “I was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis,” he explained. “That was quite a harrowing experience… I recall director Martin McDonagh visiting me in the hospital and asking, ‘Are you still up for doing this film?’ just days after my surgery. They were considering amputating my arm… and they warned me, ‘If we hadn’t caught it, there was a chance you could have passed away.’
When questioned about the origin of his infected wound leading to the virus, Keoghan explained it was due to a bottle, following an argument at a pub.
Keoghan openly discussed his upbringing, which involved spending time in foster care and residing with thirteen distinct families. He affectionately referred to his mother as “wonderful” and “beautiful,” but she battled an addiction to heroin. In conversation with Theroux, he recalled the experience of waiting on the steps for a social worker, hoping for a new family to arrive at the playground in the office, testing the fit before moving to a completely new neighborhood and home.
