As a gamer with a deep-rooted passion for history and politics, I found Sebastian Stan‘s words during his interview to be both enlightening and powerful. Having immigrated to America at a young age, much like my own family, I can relate to his profound appreciation for the American dream and the opportunities it provides.
On a recent interview, actor Sebastian Stan, known for his role as the young Donald Trump in the controversial film “The Apprentice”, criticized the former president and current Republican presidential candidate. Just two days before Election Day, he described him as a “nervous, fearful man” who seems to be indifferent towards people’s circumstances, using the colloquial phrase “ain’t caring about your situation.
Stan recently made his most forceful comments about Trump yet, during a recording for an upcoming episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast. This session took place at the Miami Film Festival GEMS event, following the film’s world premiere at Cannes in May, North American premiere at Telluride in September, and U.S. release in October.
Stan urged the crowd to watch The Apprentice on V.O.D. prior to voting, stating, “If you’re a resident here, you really ought to, as it’s your prerogative.” He underscored this by saying, “You have the right to be inquisitive and informed about what there is to know.” He went on to say, “What’s so contentious about this movie? I believe the most unsettling aspect is our current state of denial regarding reality. If you wish to truly understand, the information is readily available; it has been meticulously recorded for the last 30 to 40 years.” Everything depicted in this film has already been documented and can be found.
As a follower, I’ve often found myself expressing frustration: “There are those who might say, ‘We no longer know what the facts are.’ That’s the predicament! He [Trump] has made things so confusing… Now, anyone can craft their own version of reality, choose what to believe, and that seems to be what people are doing. However, I firmly believe that if you truly care, there’s still a way to discern the truth.
As for the value of presenting facts in a film, as opposed to another form? “I can sit here and tell you things you’ve heard already for, like, 30,000 hours, and it’s not really going to make a difference,” he lamented. “You hear facts, we all hear information, but you don’t experience it. It’s the experience of being with this person for two hours, and seeing where he’s coming from, and really asking yourself at the end of this film, ‘Do you trust this person? Do you really trust that this guy is going to make a decision that’s going to be good for you or good for him?’ And let me tell you something: There is one paranoid, scared little man that’s still out there fighting the good fight to get into the membership club of Manhattan and be put on a plaque on a wall. He ain’t caring about your situation. It’s that he‘s got to get there first. And that’s just what the film is.”
Stan, a native of Romania who moved to the United States at age 12 with his mother, expressed that he was captivated by The Apprentice, as it resonates deeply with his perception of the American dream: “Initially, my perspective towards this show was dismissive and judgmental. However, it evolved into something more profound, encompassing not just the individual, but also a particular mindset and the essence of the American dream that we’re all familiar with. I’ve been pondering over it since my mother, in New York City, pointed towards the Twin Towers and shared, ‘This is the promised land, this is the land of the free, this is the land of opportunity. This is where you can become someone. And I sacrificed my life for you to get here.’ Ever since then, I’ve been enamored by this concept. In many ways, I am a living embodiment of the American dream. I consider myself fortunate.
He went on to say, “The film posed the query, ‘What is the price?’ This character served as an illustration of the potential consequences when one loses their identity by being overly engrossed in a single pursuit, disregarding even their own humanity.
As a passionate fan, I’ve often pondered if the actor has any reservations about producing the film or speaking up against Trump, given the strong likelihood of his re-election and Trump’s threat to retaliate against his critics. Stan candidly admitted that many have advised him not to take such steps. In fact, Jimmy Kimmel humorously inquired if Stan still holds his Romanian passport, considering Trump’s threats of deportation for American citizens. As Kimmel joked, ‘Sounds like Europe will be my new home.’ However, fear is not something that I or Stan believe in. Regrettably, I hail from a place where people were suppressed and lived in fear. This very experience was another factor that propelled me to say, “I must take this stand.
