As an automotive enthusiast with over two decades of passion for Italian sports cars, I must say that Modena Automobili’s Project MA-01 is nothing short of a dream come true. Having grown up admiring the Maserati Biturbo-Shamal, it warms my heart to see this iconic vehicle being reimagined with a modern twist without losing its essence.
Modena Automobili is undertaking an ambitious project, called Project MA-01, which involves modernizing the famous 1990s Maserati Biturbo-Shamal into a sleek, muscular supercar for today’s era. After investing more than 1,000 hours in brainstorming sessions and seeking advice from experts, the team at Modena aims to revamp the Biturbo-Shamal with a contemporary twist while maintaining its iconic Italian charm.
Project MA-01 integrates the knowledge of Modena Automobili’s internal experts along with external engineering companies. The project features substantial enhancements, such as a potent 500hp 3L V6 twin-turbo engine, jointly developed by Ferrari and Maserati, which is found in the Maserati Ghibli S. This high-performance engine propels the vehicle from 0 to 60 mphp in just 4.7 seconds, reaching a top speed of 177 mph. The ZF eight-speed sequential automatic transmission of the Ghibli S, fine-tuned for quick gear shifts in 150 milliseconds, is designed to deliver swift acceleration while maximizing fuel efficiency and minimizing emissions.
For enhanced stability and safety, the original Maserati Biturbo chassis has undergone extensive scanning, strengthening and coating. This transformation maintains the Shamal’s signature character while accommodating the advanced Ghibli S powertrain. While still a work in progress, once complete, Modena is expected to only produce 33 examples, each starting at $600,000 USD.
