Jamie Lee Curtis’ Comments About A Possible Halloween Return Has Me Conflicted As A Fan

As a lifelong horror enthusiast with more years under my belt than I care to admit, I’ve seen my fair share of slashers and scream queens. The latest chapter in the saga of John Carpenter’s Halloween franchise – Halloween Ends – had me on the edge of my seat, and left me with a mix of emotions that only a true fan could understand.

The horror genre has been thriving for years now, to the delight of fans like me. Some of the best horror movies returned to theaters with new sequels, including John Carpenter’s Halloween franchise. Blumhouse’s trilogy (some of which is streaming with a Peacock subscription) completed with Halloween Ends, which was billed as Jamie Lee Curtis’ final appearance as Laurie Strode. And as such, the Oscar-winning actress’ comments about a possible Haloween return has me conflicted as as fan.

The sequential order of the Halloween series can be puzzling, but the Blumhouse trilogy functioned as a direct continuation from John Carpenter’s 1978 initial release. In the final installment, Halloween Ends, Michael Myers was supposedly killed definitively…or so it seemed in that particular timeline. However, despite appearing to have finished with her iconic role, Jamie Lee Curtis recently expressed some ambiguity regarding her character’s fate when speaking to Entertainment Weekly. As she put it:

I’ve retired my bell-bottom pants and light blue collared shirt, and with a fond goodbye, I’ve handed over [Laurie] to the passage of time. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my 65 years, it’s that you can never rule out the unexpected.

To put it simply, she’s not off base with her thoughts. Managing franchises, particularly in the horror genre, can be quite complex. Even if Halloween Ends were to effectively end Michael Myers, or The Shape as some might call him, there was still anticipation among viewers for additional films in the series. However, it would indeed catch us off guard if Jamie Lee Curtis reprised her role as Laurie Strode and continued kicking butt in another upcoming horror movie.

In the David Gordon Green trilogy, Halloween Ends wasn’t my favorite, but I was thrilled by how definitively they disposed of Michael Myers in that storyline. It was clear he wouldn’t return after being torn apart by a massive shredder, which meant that Haddonfield was finally rid of The Shape (the Boogeyman). Therefore, having Jamie Lee Curtis reappear on the big screen battling Michael again would undermine that climax… despite my fondness for Laurie Strode.

It’s important to clarify that I, being a die-hard horror enthusiast, am open to delving into more Halloween-themed content at some point down the line. This encompasses the forthcoming ‘Halloween’ TV series and any movies that may materialize as a result. However, I have reservations about Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role as Laurie Strode, given her exceptional portrayal in the last three films.

Despite any mixed emotions, I’d certainly attend movie theaters to catch Jamie Lee Curtis in another “Halloween” film. It’s the anticipation of Laurie and Michael’s climactic confrontation in “Halloween Ends” that left me with a sense of completion. However, I can’t help but worry that another Curtis appearance might not deliver the same level of satisfaction.

There seems to be some uncertainty about when Halloween will grace the big screen again, however, you can stream the Blumhouse trilogy right now. To make plans for a cinema visit next year, take a look at the 2025 movie release dates.
