As a seasoned film enthusiast with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that the John Wick universe has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride of action, drama, and suspense. With each installment, the creative minds behind the franchise have managed to weave an intricate web of characters that keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
In the current state of affairs, it seems like Keanu Reeves’ tenure in the John Wick universe may be on hold (temporarily), but director Chad Stahelski has plans to reintroduce several beloved characters from the series in standalone spin-offs. Over the course of four films, Stahelski, David Leitch, and Erica Lee have constructed a dynamic underworld populated by assassins, with audiences meeting an intriguing array of side characters as Wick (Reeves) navigated his global quest to restore his reputation and return to retirement. So far, only two characters have confirmed spin-offs: the unnamed Ballerina from the Ruska Roma family in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, and Donnie Yen’s Caine from Chapter 4. However, the creative team has many more ideas up their sleeves for potential future stories.
To mark the 10th anniversary of John Wick, Screen Rant had an interview with Leitch, Stahelski, and Lee, where they discussed their desired character revivals from the past four movies. Delving into the depths of the John Wick universe, Director Chad Stahelski expressed a strong desire to bring back John Leguizamo’s mechanic and David Patrick Kelly’s enigmatic character Charlie. However, Stahelski’s preference might surprise some fans as he also mentioned Jimmy, the cop, whom he adores. Stahelski stated, “I know we brought him back in the second one. I absolutely love Jimmy. He’s an excellent actor and a fantastic person too.” To conclude, Stahelski highlighted the two most beloved characters in the series, whose returns fans are eagerly awaiting.
“I’d bring back Common, and
I’d bring back Halle Berry in a second.

Apart from Erica Lee, there’s another individual who hopes to witness a familiar face reappear in the series once more. It’s possible you may have overlooked the fact that the original John Wick, starring four-time Academy Award nominee Willem Dafoe as Marcus, a sniper who held a close bond with the titular assassin. Lee expressed her sentiments by saying, “Willem is such an exceptional individual and a brilliant actor; I would have cherished having him back.” Lee expresses faith that there’s potential for the franchise to resurrect its deceased characters, including John Wick himself, stating:
It seems to me that we took out Common in a manner that raised questions about whether we could resurrect him. As for John Wick, it appears to me that he could potentially return.
David Leitch Feels John Wick Has Served His Purpose
Although Chad Stahelski and Erica Lee have numerous characters they’d be thrilled to reintroduce to the series, David Leitch is content with the current state of affairs. In essence, he stated, “I adore them all, but I feel like each one has played their part in the narrative.
In the upcoming spin-off film, titled “Ballerina“, Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as a slightly younger version of John Wick. However, the release of “John Wick Chapter 5” remains uncertain, considering the conclusive ending of “Chapter 4“. Director Chad Stahelski expressed hope that the characters in these films will remain deceased, as this ending provides the “emotional resolution” needed to keep high-action movies like these relatable and realistic. He added:
In my opinion, when narrating a story, one must evoke emotions or create an emotional release. I haven’t had any second thoughts about this. The initial film was beautifully crafted, and every actor gave their best, which resulted in a product that stands as it is.
