As a film critic with a penchant for action films and a fondness for Daisy Ridley’s impressive acting range, I can confidently say that her latest venture into the action genre, “Dedication,” promises to be nothing short of exhilarating. With Martin Campbell at the helm, the creative mind behind the acclaimed James Bond film Casino Royale, and a plot reminiscent of Die Hard, this film has all the makings of an adrenaline-fueled spectacle.
Actress Daisy Ridley, known for her role as Rey Skywalker in the Star Wars series, is swapping lightsabers for assault rifles in the forthcoming action-thriller directed by Martin Campbell, who previously helmed Casino Royale, a highly praised James Bond film. Prior to her Star Wars solo film, Ridley has been securing several intriguing roles ahead of time. Her newest role is that of a Marine Corps commander, where she’ll need to employ her exceptional fighting abilities to fend off assailants and rescue hostages in the movie titled Dedication.
According to Variety, it has been announced that Ridley is collaborating with Campbell in their upcoming action-thriller titled “Dedication.” This film is penned by Dan Gordon, who previously worked on “Wyatt Earp” and “Passenger 57.” The plot revolves around Major Billie Jean Parker, a highly decorated Marine Corps commander who was compelled to retire following an unfortunate mission in the Philippines that resulted in civilian casualties. Now, Ridley’s character is presented with an opportunity for redemption when anarchists seize control of a school building and take hostages. To save lives and combat the invading adversaries, she must employ her military expertise. The official summary of the storyline:
Billie Jean Parker (Ridley), an honored Marine Corps commander, is dismissed from service following a dangerous mission in the Philippines where civilian casualties occurred while capturing anarchist leader Omar Romatas. With her career at stake, she pays a visit to her dying father, Clyde, a former Marine, who asks her to attend a dedication ceremony for a school building named after him. However, this event takes a tragic turn when Bento, the vengeful son of Omar Romatas, launches an attack, taking hostages. Pushed back into combat, Billie Jean devises traps and executes strategic strikes to outmaneuver the assailants. Her battlefield intuition and relentless efficiency flip the tide, as she confronts her past and demonstrates her value in a brutal fight that will shape her legacy.
The second collaboration between Ridley and Campbell is titled “Dedication,” an action movie reminiscent of Die Hard. This film features the Star Wars actress engaging in intense action sequences, much like the one coming up in Cleaner. Similarly, it appears that Dedication will revolve around a hostile takeover plot. Produced by Gemstone Films, Phil Hunt (Talk to Me), Sagiv Diamant (The Expendables 4), and Valentin Dimitrov (The Hitman’s Bodyguard), Dedication also has Highland Film Group’s Arianne Fraser and Delphine Perrier as executive producers, with Gaby Whyte Hart handling the casting.
Daisy Ridley Becomes an Action Star in Cleaner
Prior to the release of “Dedication” in the upcoming years, Daisy Ridley features in the action movie “Cleaner,” directed by Martin Campbell. In line with its title, Ridley portrays a window cleaner who finds herself in a hostage situation when terrorists seize a building she’s working on. With her MMA and firearm abilities, she is called upon to rescue hostages. Remarkably similar to the recently announced “Dedication,” this plot may ring a bell. However, Ridley’s exceptional performance as an action hero in this film has clearly earned her another opportunity to tackle another hostage crisis. Despite her recent role in the new “Star Wars” trilogy, Ridley expresses that this is her debut in a purely action-packed movie. In her own words:
As the creator and lead actor of Magpie, crafting it from scratch was a unique journey unlike any other. Now, with Cleaner, I find myself immersed in what seems like my first action film experience, even though I’ve taken on action roles before. It’s an intriguing sensation, exploring new dimensions within the action genre.
And it’s really hard work, but it’s really fun because I f—ing love action movies. I love John Wick. I love car chases. I love fights. I love all of that. So, we’re starting a big fight sequence tomorrow that I’m very excited about. In terms of [choosing between] the films, no, it’s like Sophie’s Choice, I couldn’t choose which one’s cooler.”
Beyond enjoying “Dedication” and “Cleaner”, I’ve also been excited about Ridley Scott’s diverse lineup, which includes films outside of the action genre. Most recently, I found myself starring in “Young Woman and the Sea”, a captivating biopic chronicling the life of the first woman to swim the English Channel. Another intriguing project is “Magpie”, a self-developed neo-noir thriller that promises an engaging watch. With Ridley’s upcoming “Star Wars” solo film still in production (hopefully, Lucasfilm sorts out their plans soon), fans like me have plenty of opportunities to catch her on the big screen in the meantime.
