Billy Zane Stuns as Marlon Brando in Waltzing With Brando Trailer

As a movie critic with a background in film history and a particular fondness for biopics, I must say that the trailer for “Waltzing With Brando” has left me thoroughly intrigued. Billy Zane’s transformation into Marlon Brando is nothing short of remarkable, a testament to his versatility as an actor. It’s like playing hide-and-seek with him – I had to squint my eyes and listen carefully to confirm it was indeed the Titanic actor in the role!

The initial preview for the upcoming biopic titled “Waltzing With Brando“, focusing on the legendary Godfather actor, has been unveiled, leaving us genuinely astonished by Billy Zane’s portrayal of Marlon Brando. The Titanic star has so effectively metamorphosed in the role that it took several moments for us to recognize that it was actually Billy Zane appearing in the movie.

The movie featuring Napoleon Dynamite actor John Heder, directed by Bill Fishman, has been acquired for international distribution by VMI Worldwide, as reported exclusively by Variety.

What Is The New Marlon Brando Movie About?

The movie, titled “Waltzing With Brando,” is inspired by the memoir of architect Bernard Judge, a resident of Los Angeles. In his 2011 book, “Waltzing with Brando: Planning a Paradise in Tahiti,” Judge narrates his experiences designing and constructing a set of rustic bungalows for the legendary actor Marlon Brando on a secluded Tahitian atoll named Tetiaroa – an isolated, uninhabited island he owned in French Polynesia. The story unfolds during the years 1969 to 1974, a period when Brando was preparing for the filming of “The Godfather” and “Last Tango in Paris.” In this project, Heder’s Judge faces the challenging task of working alongside Brando and his peculiar demands.

During that period, Brando, who was globally recognized as the most prominent actor, was filming “Mutiny on the Bounty“. It was then that he stumbled upon and acquired a small, uninhabited island. His objective wasn’t just to flee the chaos of being Hollywood’s most famous actor, but also to demonstrate to the world how one could live harmoniously with nature and establish an eco-friendly lifestyle. To achieve this dream, he enlisted Judge, who was then a relatively unknown architect in Los Angeles, to construct what Brando envisioned as “the world’s first genuine ecological retreat”.

In the trailer, Zane seamlessly embodies every aspect of his character – physically, emotionally, and vocally. The unique relationship between Brando and Judge forms the core of both the trailer and the movie, showcasing all of Brando’s unconventional and intriguing concepts, such as his attempt (or so it is said) to make drinkable water from his own urine on the island.

In an excerpt from the 2021 obituary published by the LA Times, Judge’s daughter, Sabrina, likened their affair to a “Robinson Crusoe-like adventure.” As a child at the time, she spent brief periods on the atoll while construction was ongoing. She recounted that they had to catch fish for their evening meals every night.

The movie is scheduled as the final-night presentation at various film festivals such as the Tahoe Film Festival, the Palm Springs International Film Festival (U.S.), and the Torino Film Festival (Italy). No specific release date has been announced, but it’s being marketed by VMI Worldwide and appears set for international distribution in 2025.

Besides Richard Dreyfuss, Rob Corddry, the cast from Emily in Paris named Camille Razat, Alaina Huffman from Smallville, Tia Carrere known for Wayne’s World, and James Jagger of Vinyl, who is also famously Mick Jagger’s son, are also part of this project.

Brando has previously been portrayed on screen and television within this time period, and actor Justin Chambers played him in the 2022 Paramount+ miniseries The Offer, which tells the story of the creation of Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic film The Godfather.
