I Had No Idea Cole Hauser Was Pals With Matt Damon And Ben Affleck, But Their Bromance Is Strong In His Sweet Story About Moving To LA

As a gamer who has seen countless movies and TV shows, I can confidently say that the bond between Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Cole Hauser is one for the history books. Growing up in Hollywood, these three were more than just co-stars; they were brothers, roommates, and each other’s biggest cheerleaders.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have long been recognized as close friends ever since they made one of the top ’90s films, “Good Will Hunting.” While both have achieved impressive careers separately, their friendship remains a significant topic of interest. But here’s an interesting fact: Cole Hauser, famed for his role as Rip in “Yellowstone,” also shares a tight bond with these two. Recently, Hauser shared insights about their friendship and hanging out together during the early days of Hollywood.

As Season 5B of “Yellowstone” is set to air on the 2024 TV lineup, there’s a palpable excitement for the reappearance of Hauser as the beloved character Rip. This role has significantly shaped his acting career, yet it’s important to note that he’s been consistently working in Hollywood for many years, and his journey began with Matt and Ben. In an interview with Parade about his early days in showbiz and his friendship with Affleck and Damon, he reminisced:

Absolutely! They’re as close as brothers. Following our collaboration in School Ties, we relocated to L.A., began auditioning, and resided together for a substantial period. Our diet mainly consisted of Oodles of Noodles, macaroni and cheese, and we could probably whip up 10 distinct versions of Top Ramen.

It’s kind of wild to picture these three eating Top Ramen for every meal. However, it’s also sweet to hear stories like this that show just how close these guys were as well as how hard they worked to get to where they are today.

As a fun trip down memory lane, Hauser crossed paths with Affleck and Damon during the filming of 1992’s “School Ties”. At that point, they hadn’t had many roles to their names. The boys from Boston shared minor roles in “Field of Dreams”, where they met Hauser’s future co-star Kevin Costner, and had starred in a few television movies. Additionally, Damon was in “Mystic Pizza”. Notably, their co-star had only been in one movie prior to this, so securing these roles was quite significant!

Subsequently, following their work on “School Ties“, all three actors proceeded with their careers. Affleck and Hauser went on to secure roles in the iconic film “Dazed and Confused“. However, it was in 1997 when they had a significant career shift as they starred together in “Good Will Hunting“.

In writing the screenplay for the movie, Affleck and Damon managed to secure Robin Williams and other seasoned actors like Stellan Skarsgård. But when it came time to cast their characters’ friends, they turned to their own personal circle. Consequently, Hauser was chosen to play Billy, while Affleck’s brother Casey took on the role of Morgan.

Currently, “Good Will Hunting” stands at 27 years old, and each member of its original cast has built a long and distinguished career. Reflecting on these accomplishments, Hauser was asked if it felt particularly rewarding to have climbed the ranks alongside this team in the entertainment industry. He affirmed that it did, and acknowledged the collective effort and hard work they had all invested, stating:

Indeed! In the past, we often discussed our shared experience of using the stairs instead of elevators. It seems that this simple act adds a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction to our daily routine.

Currently, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Cole Hauser are all highly esteemed and accomplished actors in the film industry. Notably, Damon and Affleck earned an Oscar for their screenplay of “Good Will Hunting” and have since starred in numerous critically acclaimed films. On the other hand, Hauser has maintained a steady acting career over the past three decades. However, his fame reached unprecedented heights when he became a cast member on “Yellowstone,” playing the role of Rip Wheeler.

Soon enough, he’ll be back on our screens as the rugged cowboy when “Yellowstone” resumes on the Paramount Network on November 10 at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. Until then, you can revisit where these characters’ friendship and careers started by streaming “School Ties” and “Good Will Hunting” with a Paramount+ subscription.
