As a die-hard Spidey fan who’s been following the web-slinger’s adventures since the early days of the Marvel Comics, I must say that the prospect of these upcoming villains gracing our screens in Spider-Man 4 is nothing short of exhilarating!
With Sony and Marvel Studios confirming the production of Spider-Man 4, I’m eagerly anticipating which Spider-Man adversaries Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will encounter next. Frankly, there are several villains for the extraordinary web-slinger that I hope to see in the upcoming Spider-Man film.
Instead of wondering who among these antagonists might feature in the upcoming superhero film, let’s delve into an analysis of nine potential Spider-Man adversaries (some of whom are yet to make their debut in a new Marvel Cinematic Universe production). Let’s rank them according to their probability of appearing in Spidey’s fourth standalone adventure in the MCU.
9. Chameleon
In the upcoming “Kraven the Hunter” film, the Chameleon makes his live-action, big-screen debut. This could potentially diminish the chances of the villain appearing in “Spider-Man 4”. However, since the 2024 movie seems to be set before Kraven’s half-brother, Dmitri Nikolaievich Smerdyakov (played by Fred Hechinger), adopts his disguise as the cunning shape-shifter, another version of the Chameleon appearing in the next Spider-Man movie might not seem repetitive.
8. Tombstone
In a potential twist, the character Alonzo Lincoln, famously known as “Tombstone” due to his pale complexion reminiscent of ice and marble, has yet to appear on screen in live-action form. This could change with Marvin “Krondon” Jones, who lent his voice to the villain in the critically acclaimed Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, reprising the role. Although there’s no solid confirmation that Tombstone will feature in Spider-Man 4, given that Peter Parker is now living independently within the city, the chance of him encountering the infamous criminal mastermind of urban crime is not entirely out of question.
7. Alistair Smythe
Previously, there were whispers that Alistair Smythe, son of the creator of the Spider-Slayer robots intended to defeat Spider-Man, could make an appearance in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” as the “Ultimate Spider-Slayer.” This role was supposed to debut in the cancelled “Amazing Spider-Man 3,” with B.J. Novak reprising it. Currently, no rumors or reports point towards his appearance in “Spider-Man 4,” but if he does make an appearance, it could mark a lucky third time for him to shine in the series. If not, it would be exciting to see this Spider-Man villain in a standalone movie, assuming it’s done well.
6. Morlun
According to J. Michael Straczynski, who created Ezekiel Sims, the character’s motivations in Madame Web resemble those of Morlun, another character Straczynski co-created who hunts Spider-Man and other superhumans with lethal intent. I think introducing the Spider-Totem hunter in Spider-Man 4 could be an excellent way for Sony to rectify what many fans saw as a misstep. While there haven’t been any discussions about his appearance in the sequel, given that we are still in the Multiverse Saga, Morlun’s ability to traverse the Marvel Multiverse makes him an ideal fit.
5. Hobgoblin
In the film “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Tom Holland’s Peter Parker had an encounter with Norman Osborn, played by Willem Dafoe who reprised his role from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. It could appear redundant to have him face another Green Goblin. Instead, it seems more plausible and exciting for him to confront the initial live-action version of the Hobgoblin. This character has been passed down among several individuals, with Ned Leeds being one of them, a role played by Jacob Batalon in the MCU. Speculations about his character turning into Hobgoblin have existed since the release of “Homecoming,” and it’s not far-fetched to imagine this transformation happening in “Spider-Man 4.
4. Prowler
After years of speculation about him playing Spider-Man, Donald Glover actually appeared in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” as Miles Morales’ uncle, Aaron Davis. Later, he made a cameo in “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” dressed as his villainous counterpart, Prowler. This could merely be an amusing Easter Egg, but it also might hint at the possibility of Glover’s Aaron Davis reappearing in the MCU, potentially even in “Spider-Man 4”. If that were to happen, it would suggest that the live-action debut of Miles Morales may not be too distant either!
3. Scorpion
2017 saw a hint dropped about a potential conflict between Tom Holland’s Spider-Man (Peter Parker) and Mac Gargan, or the Scorpion, when a criminal character portrayed by Michael Mando encountered Adrian “Vulture” Tooms (Michael Keaton) in prison during the end credits scene of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Could this teaser be fulfilled in Spider-Man 4? I truly hope so, as it’s hard to believe that Kevin Feige and company don’t have something exciting planned for the venomous member of the Sinister Six.
2. Kingpin
Wilson Fisk, a villain established in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has previously made his mark in various TV shows like “Daredevil,” “Hawkeye,” “Echo,” and the upcoming “Daredevil: Born Again” on Disney+. Known for his dominance in the criminal underworld, Fisk, portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio, has yet to make an appearance in an MCU film. Interestingly, there have been rumors that he was set to be the primary antagonist in “Spider-Man 4,” a role that would have seen Peter Parker and Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock joining forces following Cox’s cameo in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Although the specific plot of the sequel may differ, it’s not impossible to imagine D’Onofrio’s Kingpin making his cinematic debut.
1. Black Cat
In a different wording: Among Spider-Man’s close associates, I strongly suspect that Black Cat is more likely to feature in Spider-Man 4 compared to Kingpin or others. This assumption isn’t solely based on rumors about Black Cat’s role but also due to the fact that her live-action and cinematic introduction was almost realized, hinted by Felicity Jones’ portrayal of Felicia Hardy in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker parted ways with his girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) due to a memory-altering spell. I think introducing a new love interest for Spidey in the form of a captivating criminal could lead to a complex moral dilemma for him, making for an intriguing and enticing narrative twist.
So far, the Marvel movies have given us eagerly anticipated renditions of numerous legendary villains. However, there are still several we’re eager to see entangled in Spider-Man’s web within the MCU. Fingers crossed, Spider-Man 4 brings this wish to life for at least one of these characters!
