Denis Villeneuve Weighs In After Dune: Part Two’s Score Is Submitted For The Oscars (Despite Ineligibility Concerns)

As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who has seen his fair share of cinematic masterpieces, I must say that the anticipation for Dune: Part 2 is palpable, and it certainly seems destined to make a significant impact at the 2025 Academy Awards. The first Dune was a visual and auditory feast, and Hans Zimmer’s score played a crucial role in setting the mood and immersing us in the world of Arrakis.

Though the release of Dune: Part 2 seems distant, it’s shaping up to be one of the standout films of 2024. As we approach awards season, there’s much anticipation about how this Frank Herbert adaptation might make its mark at the 2025 Academy Awards. It’s currently being considered in categories like Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and numerous technical categories. However, there’s some uncertainty regarding whether Hans Zimmer’s music for the film will be eligible for a nomination in the Best Score category due to certain discussions suggesting potential ineligibility. The movie’s director has since voiced his thoughts on this matter.

In a twist of fate, Hans Zimmer won an Oscar in 2022 for his work on the original Dune film’s score. However, it seems that history might not repeat itself for Dune: Part 2, as there are reports suggesting that its score may be ineligible for recognition due to a high percentage of repeated cues from the music used in the 2021 movie. This exceeds the 20% threshold set by the Academy. Despite this, Warner Bros. has submitted the score for consideration in the category, and director Denis Villeneuve has commented on the matter.

It seems to me that we’re not quite finished with this… I was present when Hans composed the music, and he truly poured his heart into it. ‘Part Two’ is a fresh piece of music. I find it hard to believe that this isn’t recognized because it ranks among the most enchanting scores Hans has ever created, and I would at least hope for it to be given due consideration.

Hans Zimmer Interview | Scoring ‘Dune: Part Two,’ John Williams, Christopher Nolan & More

According to Variety’s interview, the filmmaker behind Dune remains optimistic that Hans Zimmer’s score for the sequel may be in contention for an Oscar. However, we won’t find out if the Academy is taking it into account until the voting period for the shortlist begins on December 9. The Academy will then reveal the top 20 scores under consideration before narrowing it down to the final five nominees.

Despite Villeneuve remaining optimistic that Hans Zimmer’s score may be nominated this year, Gold Derby’s Oscar odds analysis currently does not include it in their predictions for the Best Score category. At this early stage of the season, Daniel Blumberg’s score for “The Brutalist”, Volker Bertelmann’s work on “Conclave”, Clément Ducol’s score for “Emilia Perez”, Kris Bowers’ “The Wild Robot” score, and the lively Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross score for “Challengers” are currently leading the rankings. Movies such as “Gladiator II” and “Saturday Night” also appear to be strong contenders in the category.

Although Dune: Part 2 appears to be disqualified from the Best Score category, it’s leading the pack for both Best Sound and Best Visual Effects nominations. You can currently watch the movie by subscribing to Max or choose to rent or purchase it. The upcoming Academy Awards are scheduled for Sunday, March 2, 2025.
