Ryan Reynolds Points Out One Of The Oscars' 'Greatest Injustices,' And I Wish Deadpool Could Fix This With The Time Slider

As a cinephile who has lived through decades of Hollywood’s most memorable moments, I wholeheartedly concur with Ryan Reynolds on his sentiments regarding one of the Oscars’ greatest oversights. The lack of recognition for Eddie Murphy’s exceptional performance in “The Nutty Professor” is a blunder that echoes through time, much like Deadpool’s infamous quips.

Each year when the Academy Award nominations roll around, it seems like everyone’s got an opinion about what should have been recognized instead. And sometimes, certain Oscar decisions from years past still spark heated debates. For me, I can’t shake the feeling that The Shawshank Redemption, a movie brimming with unforgettable scenes, was robbed of the Best Picture title at the 67th Academy Awards in favor of Forrest Gump. Now Ryan Reynolds, who’s been on fire this year, has spoken up about what he considers one of the Oscars’ biggest blunders. It’s got me daydreaming that Deadpool could somehow use Cable’s time manipulation powers to correct this oversight!

During an appearance on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast, Ryan Reynolds – fresh from the acclaim and box office success of Marvel’s latest film, Deadpool & Wolverine – dismissed the possibility that he and co-star Hugh Jackman would host the 97th Academy Awards due to their busy schedules. Despite this, Reynolds expressed a hope for more comedy films to be honored at the Oscars, leading him to mention a notable snub in his opinion as an example of a truly outstanding one.

It’s quite unfortunate and one of the biggest injustices that Eddie Murphy hasn’t received an Oscar for his outstanding performance in “The Nutty Professor.

“For a long time, Eddie Murphy’s performance in ‘The Nutty Professor’ has been highly regarded as one of his best. This film is actually a remake of the original movie starring Jerry Lewis. In this 1996 production, Murphy played seven distinct roles, with Professor Sherman Klump being the most significant. The movie received generally positive reviews from critics, who particularly appreciated Murphy’s multiple performances. It was successful enough to inspire a sequel titled ‘Nutty Professor II: The Klumps’, but that sequel didn’t achieve the same level of critical or commercial success.

However, as Ryan Reynolds noted, Eddie Murphy wasn’t nominated for the Best Actor Oscar at the 69th Academy Awards. The only actor nominated that year in that category who delivered a comedic performance was Tom Cruise for “Jerry Maguire,” which was quite different from what Murphy portrayed in “The Nutty Professor.” Although Murphy received a Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy nomination at the Golden Globes of that same year, it would have been gratifying to see him get an Oscar nod, if not take home the statue.

It’s possible to fix this issue if Deadpool, created by Reynolds, were to utilize the Time Slider he obtained from Cable. Instead of just saving Vanessa Carlysle or battling his Weapon XI counterpart from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and even traveling to the main MCU as seen in Deadpool & Wolverine, perhaps he could use this time travel device to influence members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences to award Eddie Murphy the Best Actor Oscar instead of Geoffrey Rush for Shine. However, if this isn’t an acceptable change in our reality, we’ll continue living with the current outcome.

If you missed out on seeing Deadpool & Wolverine in theaters, it can be purchased digitally and on physical media now, and will be streamable with a Disney+ subscription starting November 12. Eddie Murphy’s latest movie, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, can be accessed with a Netflix subscription.
