Nicholas Hoult Recalls Hearing on the Radio That Robert Pattinson Was Batman, Yet He Was “Auditioning Next Weekend”

As a seasoned gamer of the Hollywood blockbuster scene, I can empathize with Nicholas Hoult’s rollercoaster ride of emotions upon hearing about Robert Pattinson‘s casting as Batman while he was auditioning for the role himself. It’s like playing a game where you’re one level away from the boss, only to find out your rival has already beaten it. The anticipation, the excitement, the crushing disappointment – it’s all part of the grand adventure that is Hollywood!

Nicholas Hoult recently shared his feelings about learning through the radio that Robert Pattinson had been chosen for the Batman role in Matt Reeves’ 2022 film, a part he himself was trying out for just a few days later.

The actor, who’ll portray Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s forthcoming Superman film, shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that learning he missed out on the part, which eventually went to Pattinson, was a deeply impactful moment for him.

In your mind, you understand that you’re competing with Rob for a role, and he’s outstanding in the film. It was the perfect pick, no doubt about it. Yet, the possibility of being involved excites you too. Matt is an amazing director, and the script is fantastic. I felt this movie would be awesome, and I wanted to be a part of it because of the intriguing character. There’s this peculiar phase before acceptance sets in, where you question yourself: ‘What if I had done things differently? Why wasn’t I chosen?’, and you go through various self-doubts.

The actor from “Warm Bodies” shared with host Josh Horowitz that trying out for a part in a big-budget comic book film can be quite an emotional rollercoaster. One reason is that these days, casting speculations are swiftly published online before the final choices have even been made privately within the production team.

A week prior to our Batman test, I was behind the wheel of my car, the radio buzzing with chatter about Rob being tapped for the new Batman role. My thoughts raced – ‘It’s not official yet! I audition next weekend. I’m hoping they’ll give me a shot.’

Despite being reluctant to undergo another audition, Hoult praised Gunn for streamlining the process for the Superman role. Initially, he tried out for the lead character, but after discussions with the director, they found that he would be more suited to portray the famous antagonist instead.

As a gamer, I can’t help but express my admiration for James Gunn’s directorial skills. His vision at DC had me buzzing with anticipation. When we chatted, they were considerate enough to spare me the ordeal of repeating the Batman process. They simply wanted me aboard this project, which was incredibly thoughtful and flattering. In essence, they were saying, “We value you as an actor. We want you in our universe.

Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
