As a child of the early 2000s, I can vividly recall the magic that was Lilo & Stitch. The animated movie was not just a story, it was an escape, a journey into a world where friendships transcended species and love conquered all. Now, as a grown-up movie lover, I’m thrilled to see this beloved tale getting a live-action remake.
Over the past few years, the adorable, genetically modified extraterrestrial character Experiment 626, widely recognized as Stitch, has proven to be a significant financial asset for Disney. This is even more so now than when the animated film “Lilo & Stitch” was initially released in 2002. With a live-action adaptation set to hit theaters next year, Stitch’s endearing fuzzy blue-and-purple persona is expected to contribute significantly to the movie’s success. Fans eagerly awaiting a sneak peek at Stitch can now get one, as Disney unveiled an exclusive, detailed look at the CGI version of Stitch on Friday during D23; take a closer look below.
Under the direction of Dean Fleischer Camp, the upcoming live-action adaptation, written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and influenced by the original script from Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, aspires to retell the heartwarming story about a young girl’s relationship with her extraterrestrial friend. Although Lilo & Stitch was not Disney’s highest-grossing film in 2002, it came in second behind Ice Age, and has spawned various movie and TV spin-offs over the years. This live-action remake of the original movie serves as the newest chapter in the franchise’s enduring legacy.
Lilo & Stich Has Assembled a Strong Cast
In a decision that respects the film’s heritage, Maia Kealoha, a young Hawaiian actress making her acting debut, takes on the role of Lilo. This new casting offers a genuine and innovative interpretation of the character. Meanwhile, Chris Sanders, the original co-director and voice actor for Stitch in the 2002 animated film, reprises his role, bringing back the mischievous alien’s voice. The ensemble is enriched by the acting prowess of Zach Galifianakis as Dr. Jumba Jookiba, Billy Magnussen as Agent Pleakley, Sydney Agudong as Nani Pelekai, Kaipo Dudoit as David Kawena, Tia Carrere reprising her role as Mrs. Kekoa, Courtney B. Vance stepping into the shoes of Cobra Bubbles, and Amy Hill taking on the character of Tūtū.
In line with Disney’s continuous endeavor to breathe new life into its beloved animated originals, “Lilo & Stitch” is set to join the list of recent live-action transformations like “Lady and the Tramp,” “Pinocchio,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “The Lion King.” Upcoming Disney productions include “Snow White” and “Moana.” These follow several others that are in development. The release date for “Lilo & Stitch” is slated for May 23, 2025, so keep an eye out for a trailer previewing this exciting adaptation soon!
