SNL's Colin Jost Revealed His Favorite Weekend Update Characters, And Queue The Nostalgia

As a devoted SNL enthusiast who has witnessed countless hours of hilarity from behind the iconic Weekend Update desk, I can confidently say that Colin Jost’s tenure has been nothing short of legendary. The man has seen it all, from the rise and fall of characters to the return of some of the most iconic faces in SNL history.

For quite some time now, Colin Jost has held the position of the longest-running Weekend Update host on SNL, giving him the opportunity to interact with numerous characters and be part of countless skits from behind that well-known desk. Every week, the creative minds behind SNL concoct fresh ideas to entertain Jost and the audience, but only a select few manage to endure as recurring SNL personalities, making multiple appearances over time. As the years have passed, Jost has developed his own preferences regarding which Weekend Update characters were the most enjoyable for him as a host, and he’s now sharing those favorites with us.

During an interview for the Empire State Building’s TikTok, Jost shared his fondest characters encountered at the Update desk, revealing a special affection for those he co-created or whose fame blossomed during his tenure as Weekend Update host. Nostalgic moments held a particular significance to him on a personal note. He expressed his eagerness towards some of the iconic characters that graced the desk when previous cast members were hosting, stating:

It was cool for me, I wrote this character called Drunk Uncle with Bobby Moynihan. He did that before I did Weekend Update. So, the fact that he came back and did that while I was an anchor on Update and we got to do it together, that was really cool. But for me, the two craziest ones and the most fun in the last couple of years were when Eddie Murphy came back and did Gumby on Update and when [Adam] Sandler came back as Opera Man, because those were two that I just loved as a kid.

It’s absolutely logical! Having Adam Sandler perform Opera Man so close to the Sandman, who returned as host in 2019, must have been incredibly surreal. And it’s downright mind-blowing that Eddie Murphy played Gumby again, over 35 years after he first introduced the character on SNL. These characters are iconic pieces of the Saturday Night Live heritage, and when the comedians resurrected them, Michael Che found himself in a dream scenario. Absolutely unbelievable moments!

Though these characters and scenes might be Jost’s favorites at present, there could be changes following SNL’s grand 50th anniversary special in February. This event is anticipated to bring together numerous comedic legends from the SNL family, with a high possibility of reprising iconic roles for skits and Weekend Update segments.

In the much-awaited special scheduled for 2025, Jost might find himself surrounded by many familiar faces from his favorite cast members, reprising iconic roles that could stir up a wave of nostalgia for everyone tuning in and participating.

Jost seemed to cherish the heritage of Weekend Update characters more than any other, but he’s also generated some unforgettable moments unique to him while sitting at the desk. Characters such as “The New Boat Owner,” the Trump Brothers, and undeniably, anything involving Cecily Strong flinging wine have become timeless classics that continue to amuse audiences.

For quite some time now, the host of Weekend Update has been at the helm, and it’s uncertain how much longer he’ll stay. However, we can only hope that he still has several more years ahead to welcome even more iconic Weekend Update guests whose appearances will be remembered for a long time.

On Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. ET, you’ll find Colin Jost on “Saturday Night Live.” This season marks its 50th, and it’s packed with top-tier hosts for the special anniversary episodes, so don’t miss out! For a trip down memory lane, fans can relive some of the funniest Weekend Update moments by streaming past shows of “SNL” through a Peacock subscription.
