As a dedicated “Yellowstone” fan and follower of all things related to the Dutton family and their rivals, I have been captivated by the complex character of Jamie Dutton, played by the talented Wes Bentley. His journey from a cunning political adversary to a conflicted brother has been a rollercoaster ride that keeps me hooked episode after episode.
In 2018, when “Yellowstone,” starring Kevin Costner, debuted on Paramount Network, its immediate success came as a shock to many. The series, centered around the Dutton family, quickly captivated viewers, causing an instant interest. Key players in this drama included Costner as John Dutton, Kelly Reilly as Beth, Luke Grimes as Kayce, and Wes Bentley as Jamie. This grand neo-Western production rapidly gained popularity, eventually becoming a cultural sensation. In 2022, more than 16 million viewers tuned in for the simultaneous premiere of the first half of Season 5.
Initially, concerns about lingering COVID-19, strikes by the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA in Hollywood, as well as the sudden exit of Costner from the show, led to a two-year break between the first half and the second half of Season 5. However, the wait is finally over as the much-anticipated continuation of “Yellowstone” will air on November 10, with the remaining episodes of Season 5 being broadcast on the Paramount Network.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel intrigued by the enigma surrounding Kevin Costner’s departure and the final wrap-up of this iconic series. There’s been an eerie silence from everyone behind the scenes, yet whispers about a potential Season 6 have started to circulate. Despite the creator, Taylor Sheridan, officially declaring this as the end for our flagship show, which has birthed numerous prequels and spin-offs, I can’t help but wonder what secrets lie beneath.
In a candid sit-down with Looper, I, who embody John Dutton’s steadfast deputy and adopted son Jamie, open up about my emotions as I bid farewell to this tormented character of mine from “Yellowstone”. Reflecting on the past, I recall a cherished moment that transpired on set during our very first season.
Bentley admits he won’t miss taking a punch on set
Here’s how I would rephrase that question in a more conversational and friendly tone:
As a gamer, let me tell you, playing Jamie has had its ups and downs. There are parts I’ll be glad to leave behind, like the heavy burden of Jamie and those intense moments when I get beaten up. Yet, I can’t deny that I’ve also cherished those scenes because working with this incredible cast and on this show has been an unforgettable journey. It’s been a unique experience, but in the world of TV, you never know if the end is really the end or if it comes too soon. [Laughs]
What can you tell us about how Jamie’s story ends? And are you content with that ending?
To avoid revealing spoilers or hints as a fellow TV enthusiast, I won’t discuss where the story leads. However, let me assure you that Taylor’s work is commendable. He never fails to impress, and this instance is no exception. Jamie’s character is superbly portrayed by Taylor, making for a captivating performance.
What’s a favorite memory — on screen or off — that stands out to you from filming this series?
That’s an excellent query! I must say, filming the scene in Season 1 with Dave Annable (Lee), Kyle Gallner (Kayce), and his son, while we sat around cooking fish, sharing laughter and jokes, was truly enjoyable. It’s rare to see Jamie laugh on screen, but that day was a delightful exception. [Laughs as I recall the memory] We had an amazing time that day. Intriguingly, it happened to be the day of the solar eclipse, so that day and the start of our show will always hold special memories for me – learning more about these characters we were fortunate enough to bring to life.
Despite the numerous challenging scenes, I experienced many rewarding moments working with Will Patton (Jamie’s on-screen father). These moments were not only enjoyable but also educational for me. Over five seasons, each scene seemed to offer a therapeutic release, making my experience quite fortunate.
He is prepared to say goodbye to Jamie forever
Was it accurate that the directors maintained secrecy regarding the complete plot of Season 5’s second half, revealing details only when necessary? If so, how did this approach influence the filming process during that part of the season?
To put it simply, I was well aware of all the details, even laughing about it. It seemed strange to me that others weren’t in the loop. Frankly, it was tough when the crew didn’t know anything at times, especially since they’re like family and have been with me from the start. Yet, keeping secrets was necessary due to the internet era and the desire to maintain confidentiality – after all, I too am a fan of TV shows and wouldn’t want spoilers. Still, I had access to everything, which made my job significantly easier. [laughs]
Is it possible that you might continue to be part of the “Yellowstone” world in some form or another? I’ve heard whispers about a potential Season 6 and numerous spin-offs – could we anticipate your return then?
To the best of my knowledge, matters of such kind are beyond my level of authority, and I must admit, I’m clueless about them. [laughs] When we returned to film the second half of Season 5, it was quite unexpected, “Alright, we’re coming back.” There’s a whirlwind of things happening that I’m unaware of. I simply appear when they request my presence, and they provide me with lines to deliver, and I’m thankful for the opportunity.
Are you at peace with the possibility that this might be goodbye with Jamie? Will you feel his absence? Can you share your emotions about it?
Since it’s a television series, I’ve always expected the storyline to change unexpectedly, even from the early episodes. For instance, receiving a script from Season 2 could reveal a sudden character death like Jamie’s. Over time, I’ve learned to be ready for such surprises that come with TV shows. The show might have been canceled at any point, so I’ve always kept myself prepared for potential endings. I don’t wish to disclose more than necessary to avoid giving anything away.
Season 5 of “Yellowstone” returns on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 8 pm ET/PT on Paramount Network.
