As a dedicated follower of Abhay Deol’s career, I have always admired his courage to tread the unconventional path in Bollywood. Growing up in a joint family with seven kids and having such humble beginnings, it was fascinating to witness how he managed to break free from the conservative shackles of his family’s small-town values.
As a committed admirer, I’m recognized for my distinct role selections in movies such as Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, Aisha, and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Hailing from the renowned ‘Deol’ dynasty within Bollywood, I share family ties with Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. Not long ago, this actor revealed that our family harbored a traditional perspective, which kept us somewhat distant from the children of the industry.
During an open conversation with Filmfare, Abhay Deol revealed that he was raised in a large extended family consisting of seven siblings. However, thanks to his father and uncle, he developed an early interest in films and the Bollywood industry.
Despite hailing from simple origins, they kept a distance from the cinematic realm’s glitz and glamour, preserving their small-town morals. Growing up, he found these values somewhat limiting. Additionally, he mentioned that women in his family were permitted to work, but not in the film industry.
Previously, I found it puzzling when we weren’t allowed to attend those so-called “film parties” or interact with children of the film industry, or professionals in the field. At that time, they were attempting to shield us, but their actions left me perplexed.
Although there were limitations, it came as no surprise that the actor who portrayed Aisha had a rebellious spirit, which led him to venture into the world of filmmaking. Furthermore, he shared that his cousin Sunny Deol often teased about his argumentative nature and believed that he would make an excellent lawyer instead.
Despite being known for a distinctive character, he chose to work in movies that deviated from typical mainstream productions. This decision caused concern among his parents and family due to its unconventional nature.
Initially in my professional journey, some of the films I selected raised concerns. These included Socha Na Tha and later ones like Manorama or Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local. However, they accepted these choices after Dev D and Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, but they didn’t want me to continue on that path due to their apprehensions.
In “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,” it was evident that the actor’s family grasped the potential difficulties that come with working on unorthodox films. Consequently, they perceived his decisions as potentially isolating him within the cut-throat competition of Bollywood.
In spite of their reservations, Deol relied on his innate acting skills, ultimately establishing himself within the industry and earning accolades for his acting. His most recent appearance on the silver screen was in 2022. Following this, he starred in the 2023 web series Trial By Fire, garnering praise for his performance.
