As a seasoned gamer of WWE’s grand spectacle, WrestleMania, I’ve seen more twists and turns than a rollercoaster ride at Six Flags. The anticipation for this year’s event is palpable, and while some matches are starting to take shape, the main events still remain shrouded in mystery.
Although WrestleMania 39 is over half a year away, some matches are beginning to take shape, yet several key aspects remain uncertain. In this article, let’s focus on the two primary events of the two nights. To be candid, it’s unclear if WWE has decided on these main events as of now, which is fueling a lot of buzz and speculation on social media. I usually ignore such rumors, but recently, I encountered a prediction that caught my attention.
Back on Friendo Club Wrestling, Steve and Larson floated an intriguing prediction that caught my attention. They suggested Cody Rhodes could square off against The Rock in the main event of WrestleMania Night One, with the victor then facing Roman Reigns during Night Two’s main event. Now, I’m not claiming this will definitely unfold, but it does seem enticing and potentially addresses some challenges WWE may be grappling with. So, let’s delve into this scenario together.
The primary uncertainty regarding WrestleMania revolves undeniably around The Rock. Following an initial misstep and negative fan response upon his comeback last year, he transitioned into a villainous role, delivering an exceptional performance in the build-up to WrestleMania 40. As business surged due to his adopted Final Boss persona, his wrestling showcase at ‘Mania received widespread acclaim from fans who were amazed by his enduring abilities. Despite facing some health issues this year, if he’s fit for the event, he will likely be featured in one of the main matches. However, this raises questions about Cody and Roman – what impact will The Rock’s presence have on them?
Many spectators have suggested that a Triple Threat main event might occur on Night Two, combining all three participants into the marquee match of the event. However, this idea has always seemed somewhat disjointed to me. While it’s easy to imagine reasons why any of the three men could harbor personal animosity towards each other, the narrative for The Rock and Roman Reigns would be distinct from that of Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes, or Cody Rhodes and The Rock. Although it’s possible to intertwine their stories, I believe doing so might dilute the impact of each individual storyline. Therefore, I’m not particularly fond of a Triple Threat main event.
I also think the match fans want to see more than any other is The Rock vs Roman Reigns, but putting that as the Night Two main event would leave Cody with a lesser match (probably Randy Orton) and could put the WWE Championship in the position of being little more than a random match on the ‘Mania card with an outcome that seems pretty obvious. Because of that, Triple H and company would likely go with The Rock and Cody Rhodes instead, but it’s unclear whether The Rock would even be a viable option to win because he’d have to, you know, stick around and defend the title. Given he’s 52 years old, it would also create reasonable questions about whether The Rock and Roman Reigns will ever even happen.
a multi-night event. This setup could address several ongoing concerns. On the first night, it seems plausible that Rock would emerge victorious, granting him another stunning moment at WrestleMania and yet another WWE Championship run. However, on the second night, he’d lose the belt, setting up the much-anticipated Roman/Rock match we’ve all been craving for. I can hardly fathom that this idea wouldn’t resonate with everyone involved!
That being said, this should still be taken as nothing more than a juicy bit of speculation. WWE did a one match leading into another format at last year’s WrestleMania, and I’m not really sure they would want to do that again. I’m also not really sure they would want to have Night 1 of WrestleMania close with a match that seems to have a likely outcome, given how much everyone wants Rock And Roman and the fact that Roman and Cody have already closed the last two WrestleManias. I also don’t know if The Rock is going to be able to do two main event matches on consecutive days. That’s hard on anyone’s body, let alone a part-timer in his 50s. And I also don’t know that WWE is going to want to give both main events to The Bloodline when there are some other great options, most prominently CM Punk and Seth Rollins.
At present, our task is simply to monitor the product every week and search for hints that might shed light on current events. The most significant developments are expected during The Royal Rumble in February, which I’m eagerly anticipating.
