As someone who grew up binge-watching Parks and Recreation, I can confidently say that Ben Schwartz has left an indelible mark on my comedy-loving heart with his iconic portrayal of Jean-Ralphio. The man’s ability to make me laugh out loud, even years after the show’s end, is truly remarkable.
If you’re familiar with the TV show “Parks and Recreation”, you’ve encountered one of sitcom history’s most irritating characters – Jean-Ralphio. Although his sister Mona-Lisa Saperstein might take the crown for being the most annoying, Jean-Ralphio gives her a tough run for her money. However, when it comes to providing laughter, he excels exceptionally well. Yes, Ben Schwartz, who plays Jean-Ralphio, is aware that he’s become a meme over time, but he recently shared an experience about discovering one of his show’s bits went viral on TikTok, and surprisingly, he showed a very non-Jean Ralphio attitude about it.
As a gamer, I’ve surely stumbled upon the catchy tune “don’t be suspicious, don’t be suspicious” accompanying a heartwarming cat clip or a hilarious skit from my favorite TikToker. It turned out that one of Parks and Recreation’s brilliant guest stars, Ben Schwartz, discovered its resurgence on social media when a buddy of his explained the intricacies of audio sampling on TikTok. In his own words:
Initially, I exclaimed, “Wow! That’s amazing! If I were a child or a starting comedian, that would be a blast to work on. You could create content with others.” They responded, “But you’re already one of them!” To which I inquired, “What do you mean?” They displayed a video of a dog attempting to snatch food slowly. It was filled with countless such videos. That particular video, I believe, went extremely viral and many might not realize it’s my voice providing the sound. People just find the sound amusing.
It’s quite surprising, isn’t it? Ben Schwartz, during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, admitted he was unaware that his viral fame on a particular platform had reached “ultra” levels, and it seems this happened quite casually. I find this response fascinating because Schwartz was intrigued by the idea of audio sampling on TikTok due to its collaborative nature, but it turns out an off-the-cuff bit he did with Jenny Slate back in 2015 is the source of inspiration for countless internet videos. If you haven’t seen one of these videos yet, I suggest giving it a look:

The sound clip comes from an extended cut of the Parks and Recreation series finale, “One Last Ride,” where Jean-Ralphio, portrayed by Schwartz, and Mona-Lisa, character of Jenny Slate, concoct a plan to fake his death for insurance money to establish a casino in Tajikistan. During the funeral, they burst into a song that gives them away. This scene is a riotous moment in the series, and it’s entertaining to observe how people utilize it to amuse others. Another way to phrase it:

Although Ben Schwartz has expressed his reluctance to reprise a character similar to Jean-Ralphio, it’s a role he might find difficult to escape entirely. In further discussion during the interview:
Occasionally, people might capture GIFs of me and send them back to me as a reaction. At times, I may reply with something like, “I won’t be able to make it, I apologize deeply,” followed by “Don’t jump to conclusions” or “You’re really making this difficult.” This is typically my experience.
1) The quotability of that television show is simply amazing! You can currently watch one of the all-time best sitcoms, “Parks and Recreation,” by subscribing to Peacock. Keep an eye out for Ben Schwartz’s voice in the upcoming movie, “Sonic The Hedgehog 3,” which will be released in theaters on December 20, 2024.
