‘Wicked’ Director Jon M. Chu Misses Film’s L.A. Premiere Due to Birth of Fifth Child

Director Jon M. Chu, of “Wicked” fame, regrettably couldn’t attend the LA premiere of his latest film – but it was due to an excellent cause.

As his musical prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” was premiering in Los Angeles, his newborn daughter was entering the world for the very first time.

On Saturday, Chu and his wife Kristin Hodge became parents to their newborn daughter. He shared a video of their little one on Instagram Stories, accompanied by the tune “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz, along with the message: “It’s unbelievable that this occurred while the movie is debuting! There’s magic in the air. Happy Premiere Day!! Welcome to our world, you’re destined for success. You have a whole lot of supportive witches by your side.

This couple now has their fifth child, with four other kids in their family: Willow, aged 7; Jonathan Heights, 5 years old; a 3-year-old named Ruby; and the youngest, Iggy, who is just 20 months old.

Chu delivered a video greeting which was played during the event, mentioning that he and his wife were currently hospitalized, eagerly waiting for the arrival of their newborn daughter.

He expressed in the video that he was poised to join his family, who were already at a hotel opposite, as they all gathered there – friends, family, and cherished ones included. For three long years, he had anticipated this moment to unveil their movie to you, but in truth, he had been waiting his entire life for this instant, for the birth of their fifth child, which was happening now. It’s no surprise that this newborn chose premiere day to make her entrance.

Earlier, Chu unveiled the news through a unique declaration on his Instagram Stories, titled “A Magical Announcement.” Accompanying this announcement was a picture taken in a hospital, featuring two bracelets with the words “defy gravity,” which is a reference to one of the songs from Wicked.

He expressed that this movie has had an enigmatic flow throughout, and today is a long-awaited moment for him. Not only is a new movie being released, but also a little girl joining the family, making it all the more exciting. Unfortunately, he won’t be attending the Wicked premiere tonight due to a sudden change in plans that occurred around 4am this morning. Instead, he and his wife will be welcoming their fifth child into their family, and they have decided not to name her Galphaba.

In theaters starting November 22, courtesy of Universal Pictures, the film “Wicked” stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, and Bowen Yang as Pfannee, among other talented actors.

On his Instagram Stories, Chu expressed gratitude to his extraordinary cast and crew: “I’m sending all the love to our incredibly talented team tonight. They truly deserve it, and I want to extend a warm welcome to my little girl who is about to make her grand entrance into our world soon. If she possesses just a fraction of the courage that my wife, Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, or Marissa Jaret Winokur have, then she will certainly defy gravity someday.

Chu additionally posted a video that included Frankie Grande, Grande’s sibling, delivering a pep talk to Hodge: “Go for it!

He additionally shared a picture of his suit wrapped inside its protective cover, playfully asking: “Shall I don the suit during the delivery?
