As a longtime viewer and devotee of “Yellowstone“, I can’t help but feel a mix of shock, sadness, and anticipation as we bid farewell to the indomitable John Dutton, portrayed by the legendary Kevin Costner. The way this iconic character met his end was nothing short of dramatic, leaving us all on the edge of our seats.

In the final act, the rule of John Dutton, portrayed by Kevin Costner, comes to an end. The ranching tycoon and governor faces his demise in “Desire is All You Need,” a decision that stirs debate and hints at the upcoming chapter in the storyline.
In the opening minutes of the episode, it becomes clear that John is deceased. His lifeless body is discovered in the Governor’s mansion, sprawled on the bathroom floor, having sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Although the authorities are tight-lipped about the exact cause of death, “Yellowstone” regular Beth Dutton (played by Kelly Reilly) swiftly accuses Jamie (portrayed by Wes Bentley) of being responsible for their father’s demise. Given her longstanding animosity towards Jamie, Beth has long believed he deserves to meet his end. She manages to persuade Kayce (Luke Grimes) to join her in a plan to gather incriminating evidence and ultimately take revenge on him.
However, it’s important to note that Jamie isn’t guilty in this situation; it appears that his girlfriend, Sarah Atwood (played by Dawn Olivieri), is responsible for the hit order, following a discussion they had earlier about escorting John to the train station. A sneak peek at the entirety of Season 5, shown after “Desire is All You Need,” hints at a reconciliation between Sarah and Jamie. Yet, the remaining episodes seem to be building up towards an unavoidable climax.
Expect a war of the Duttons to bring about a new era
In the final stretch of Season 5, the Dutton family appears to be heading towards a conflict – possibly a range war that could potentially threaten their ranch. During the sneak peek for Season 5B, Jamie suggests that the best solution for their problems is to part ways with the ranch. The footage also shows Kayce and Jamie getting physical, Beth declaring her intention to eliminate Jamie, and Rip Wheeler (played by Cole Hauser) struggling to keep things under control from a distance. It seems that Beth’s primary focus is taking action against Sarah, who is depicted destroying her phone with a hammer.
It appears that Mo Brings Plenty, the wildcard character, proposes a deal to Beth in the trailer. One possibility is that he could be requesting something regarding the Dutton family’s century-old property agreement, as it might revert back to the Broken Rock Reservation and the tribe led by Mo and Monica (Kelsey Asbille) at some point.
Although Season 5 might not definitively mark the conclusion of “Yellowstone,” Variety previously hinted at a possible Season 6 focusing on Rip and Beth, but it appears that we are approaching the finale for several beloved characters in the series.
