As a long-time fan of Tim Allen and classic sitcoms, I can’t help but feel excited about ABC’s upcoming midseason schedule! The return of Allen in “Shifting Gears” is definitely something I’ve been eagerly waiting for, and the fact that it’ll be filmed on the same lot as “Home Improvement” just adds to the nostalgia.
Some television series scheduled for 2025, such as Ironheart from the MCU and Stranger Things on Netflix, have been in development for a number of years. Others, like Tim Allen’s comeback to primetime with Shifting Gears on ABC, were created and produced in 2024. The Last Man Standing veteran is set to star in this new sitcom alongside Kat Dennings from 2 Broke Girls. It appears that we’ll have the chance to watch Shifting Gears premiere before The Conners returns for its seventh and final season.
With ABC unveiling its mid-season lineup, we won’t have to wait long after the new year begins to find out what Allen’s latest TV father figure will contribute, likely something tool-related like a circular saw. On the other hand, another cherished primetime family won’t appear until several months later, and as of now, The Conners‘ premiere date remains undetermined.
Let’s take a look at the first half of ABC’s upcoming midseason fare below.
A week following the grand arrival of 2025, fans can expect to encounter Matt, a widower and vintage car restorer portrayed by Tim Allen, whose life is unexpectedly disrupted when his daughter (Dennings) along with her teenage grandkids, moves in with him after going through a separation. This narrative seems reminiscent of conventional sitcom plots, and the unique detail here is that the filming will take place on the set of Home Improvement.
I’m really curious to find out how Shifting Gears will serve as an introduction for Abbott Elementary, and what the initial viewership numbers might look like during those first few weeks. Since ABC doesn’t have many options for half-hour sitcoms in their schedule, if this combination doesn’t succeed, I can’t help but wonder what alternative they might consider.
As a gamer, I can’t wait to dive into the latter part of ABC’s midseason lineup, filled with shows originally streamed on Hulu and now making their way to broadcast television. After wrapping up the second season of “Only Murders in the Building,” there’s plenty more entertainment to keep me hooked!
Fans of “The Rookie” and those anticipating “Scamanda” in the 2024 Fall TV lineup should find the new schedule reassuring, given they’ve been eagerly awaiting fresh episodes for quite some time now. However, it’s worth noting a notable absence that requires attention.
Why Isn’t The Conners Season 7 On ABC’s Schedule?
Although ABC has fixed dates for most of its original shows (including those on Hulu), it hasn’t officially announced when The Conners‘ final season will start yet. At present, it remains the only scripted series that still doesn’t have a confirmed premiere date. The plan is currently to launch it in March 2025.
It appears that the network has planned the Lanford-set comedy to conclude its remarkable run in the same May finale period as many other network shows, according to the ABC statement.
- The farewell season of The Conners will return in March 2025. Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and Press Your Luck will also return in the new year. Airdates to be announced at a later date.
In an interview earlier this year, The Conners‘ showrunner Bruce Helford and executive producer Dave Caplan discussed their unconventional strategy for the finale episodes. This method aims to offset the notion that the upcoming season will be abbreviated, with only six episodes instead of the usual number.
In the interim, I have to hone my deep throaty growls, as “Shifting Gears” is on its way, and I want to be well-prepared.
