As a dedicated fan who has been following the gripping saga of “The Handmaid’s Tale” since its inception, I am absolutely thrilled to see the first images from season six! The suspense and anticipation have been building for what feels like an eternity, and finally, we are one step closer to unraveling the intricate web of stories that has captured our hearts.

Last season of The Handmaid’s Tale started and ended with a look from star Elisabeth Moss.

In the fifth season of Hulu’s popular dystopian show, June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) and Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) faced off, sparking a smirk that echoed worldwide. The series took an unexpected turn when it concluded, mirroring the beginning as these characters found themselves together on a train of Gilead refugees, bound for Vancouver and eventually Hawaii, despite being alone.

In November 2022, Moss, who was also an executive producer and director of the Emmy-winning series, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the show’s cliffhanger ending. He said, “The finale is actually a hopeful conclusion for the show and the season, which isn’t something we typically do. It’s a cliffhanger, but it has a positive aspect to it. Naturally, the person on that train happens to be her counterpart, the other half of this journey.

Only showrunner Bruce Miller and his creative team, which includes Moss, knew where June and Serena were headed for the final destination for the hit Hulu series. And now, two years after that finale released, the first images from season six have arrived for fans to see what they came up with.

The pictures you see are taken from the initial two episodes (at the start), which were skillfully orchestrated by Moss, followed by the third episode, masterminded by David Lester.

Simultaneously, Disney unveiled a 2025 preview video featuring glimpses of their upcoming shows, one of which hinted at season six of The Handmaid’s Tale. At the 1 minute and 35 second mark, Serena, with a serene expression, says, “Something significant is on the horizon.” June responds, “Let’s bring them back,” indicating a return to their previous location.

Season six returns in spring 2025, with a specific date yet to be announced.

The story of “The Handmaid’s Tale” portrays a dystopian society where individual control over one’s body is gradually taken away, and this narrative has strikingly predicted certain real-world occurrences since it debuted in 2017. As the final season premieres during Donald Trump’s presidency, it may be more relevant than ever before.

But Miller has been working toward his last stop from the beginning. When speaking after season five, he reiterated that to THR, saying, “When I talked to Lizzie [Moss] and Margaret [Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale author] at the end of season four about the future, I started to think there’s a very, very nice little piece that comes at the end that I’ve been working toward. Season five is so much about June and her feelings about revenge, and how to exact revenge in a way that feels good and that feels like you’ve corrected some of the balance in the world. So much of that is about moving closer to June being someone who can do something again: Someone who isn’t just out of Gilead and in a ball but who has the ability to act. And then it’s a question next season of: What the hell is she going to do? You know you have to do something, because you know the world isn’t going to change unless you do something. What do you do?”

He continued, “You’re looking at a world these two women made and, look how powerful they are. When they’re on top, they’re really, really making a difference. And when they’re on the bottom, they’re still making a difference. They’re taking care of their kids and getting them out of danger. If you look at June as a cowboy, she isn’t doing very well. If you look at June as a farmer, she’s doing spectacularly well. Look at those fields, they’re all overflowing with rebels and smart people and Hannah [her older daughter] writing her name — who knows who else she taught to write her name at that school? She’s June Appleseed.”

Based on the renowned novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale delves into the life within the dystopian society of Gilead, a totalitarian regime that took over what was once the United States. The story revolves around Offred (Moss), one of the few fertile women in this oppressive state, known as Handmaids in the Republic of Gilead, who endures life as a reproductive surrogate for a powerful Commander and his discontented wife.
