As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of cinema since the days of black-and-white reels, I must say that the impending passing of Jeff Goldblum’s iconic character, Dr. Ian Malcolm, from the Jurassic Park franchise feels like the twilight of an era. However, with the arrival of Jonathan Bailey to take up the mantle in the upcoming musical fantasy Wicked and the Jurassic World Rebirth, I can’t help but feel a sense of renewed excitement and anticipation.
In 2022’s “Jurassic World Dominion”, Jeff Goldblum once again embodied Dr. Ian Malcolm, but his long-running stint in the dinosaur franchise is now concluding. Goldblum is now prepared to hand over the mantle to newcomer Jonathan Bailey. The two actors will share the stage in the upcoming musical “Wicked”, with Bailey playing Fiyero Tigelaar and Goldblum portraying the enigmatic Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
In a chat with Variety, the 72-year-old Goldblum expressed his delight at passing the role to Bailey, who will depict paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis alongside Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali in next year’s “Jurassic World Rebirth”. “The world’s future is bright,” he declared, followed by a rendition of the “Jurassic Park” theme. As always, Goldblum added a touch of style with, “And I can’t imagine anyone better to take over the baton than Jonathan Bailey! It’s unique, it’s extraordinary… It’s Jonathan Bailey!
During the interview, Bailey was present too, sharing that he had the chance to discuss joining the series with Goldblum earlier this year. He expressed his deep fondness for the original film as a timeless classic, and his aspiration to recreate some of the enchantment that Goldblum, Sam Neil, and Laura Dern created in 1993.
I was given the chance to step into the Jurassic world, following the lively lead of Jeff in the conga line. The initial movie was a remarkable milestone in cinema, largely due to Jeff’s performance, but also, I attended with my family, immersing ourselves in the breathtaking cinematic experience. There’s so much about this opportunity that I feel honored to be a part of. However, similar to Wicked, there is a sense of duty. If I can emulate even half of what Jeff, Sam Neill, and Laura Dern accomplished, I will consider myself incredibly fortunate.
Jurassic World Rebirth Is a Reset for the Franchise
For nearly a decade, the Jurassic World trilogy has relied heavily on Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. The latest installment concluded with dinosaurs and humans learning to live together, but when the series resumes next year, it will introduce new characters, effectively starting anew while also picking up where the last film ended.
Five years after the incidents in Dominion, the ancient beasts face another threat of extinction. However, they possess the genetic material crucial for a lifesaving drug beneficial to humanity. Therefore, Bailey, Johansson, and Ali are assigned a clandestine operation to collect some DNA samples from the three largest dinosaurs that ever existed. During their journey, they uncover a secret that’s been hidden for decades.
The upcoming trilogy’s rebirth is anticipated to generate substantial revenue at the box office, but sustaining its success could pose a challenge, an issue that has been present since the beginning of this franchise. The initial trilogy began with an impressive $407 million box office collection in 1993, however, by the time the third installment arrived eight years later, it had only earned $181 million. This pattern was also observed with Jurassic World, which grossed $653 million as compared to Dominion’s earnings of $376 million.>
To ensure it doesn’t lose audience appeal and face a decline as events unfold, Rebirth needs to keep its story engaging. Fortunately, director Gareth Edwards, known for his work on Godzilla and Rogue One, is in charge, giving us confidence that he’ll create a movie that skillfully combines the necessary elements for a successful summer blockbuster.
