As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I hear about The CW‘s transformation. I remember late-night marathons of Supernatural and Arrow, the thrill of watching Vampire Diaries unfold week after week. These shows were more than just entertainment; they were part of my life, part of my journey as a gamer.
The television network, The CW, is experiencing job cuts as its owner, Nexstar, strives to revamp the channel with the aim of attracting a wider and more substantial viewer base, while also boosting profitability and ensuring The CW’s long-term prosperity. This information was communicated in a memo sent to employees on Tuesday by The CW’s CEO, Brad Schwartz.
As a gamer speaking directly, I’d say: “I’m part of a team at Nexstar that’s all about making things smoother and more straightforward. We’re working hard to reshape our network to attract a wider gaming community, boost profits, and set the stage for long-term victories.
Parting ways with our cherished team members isn’t a decision made casually, and we aim to handle this process carefully,” the representative explained further. “Additionally, we are dedicated to navigating through this extraordinary period of transformation in the media sector, with the goal of establishing a business that will not only survive but prosper.
Two years back, Nexstar snagged The CW from Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount. Ever since, I’ve been working hard to slash costs and revamp the channel, aiming to transform this network, notorious for being in the red, into a profitable powerhouse.
Previously, our CEO, Dennis Miller, departed from the company last month. In his absence, Schwartz, who was in charge of programming, has assumed additional duties.
Last year, Miller played a significant role in The CW’s venture into sports, initiating the broadcast of LIV Golf. Since then, they have added college football and basketball, NASCAR, and WWE NXT to their roster.
Sports will be a top priority going forward, Schwartz indicated in his memo.
2025 sees us progressing with an abundance of live sports, such as the NASCAR Xfinity series, WWE NXT, PAC-12 Football, ACC Football and Basketball, along with other exciting events. In addition, we’re developing fresh game shows like Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit, captivating unscripted hits like Penn & Teller: Fool Us and Police 24/7, and reviving popular scripted series such as Sullivan’s Crossing, Wild Cards, and All American.

Team:
Today, we faced one of the toughest choices a company encounters – reducing several positions. Parting ways with our gifted teammates and associates is emotionally challenging and highly personal, as each of these individuals has significantly contributed to our identity. We’re taking these steps not because it’s simple, but because we firmly believe they are essential for constructing a more robust future for The CW.
In the words of renowned media executive Peter Chernin, “The most rewarding jobs are those where you get to create something new or rejuvenate something existing.” For the past two years, we’ve dedicated ourselves to transforming and reinventing The CW, navigating intense competition and significant shifts within our industry. It’s remarkable to look back on all that we’ve achieved in such a brief period. Our journey has been demanding yet enriching, and there is still much more work ahead of us.
Moving forward, we’ll work on expanding our network to reach a more diverse and extensive group of viewers, persist in our journey towards financial stability, and consistently aim for lasting success at The CW.
Moving ahead into the year 2025, we’re escalating our offerings with an abundance of live sports events. These include the NASCAR Xfinity series, WWE NXT, PAC-12 Football, ACC Football and Basketball, and many more. We’re also creating thrilling new game shows such as Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit, hit unscripted shows like Penn & Teller: Fool Us and Police 24/7, and bringing back popular scripted series like Sullivan’s Crossing, Wild Cards, and All American.
Moving forward, we will continue to stay flexible, embracing change, and ready to evolve and prosper. To the ones departing, I extend my gratitude for your contributions in molding The CW. For those who remain, let’s continue to strive, innovate, and construct something that makes us all proud.
Sincerely,
Brad
