As a die-hard fan of sitcoms and comedy legends, I must say that the latest episode of “Lopez vs. Lopez” was nothing short of a laughter riot! The addition of Jeff Ross, the Roastmaster General himself, added an extra layer of hilarity to the already entertaining series.
In the case of Lopez vs. Lopez, it’s become well-known for several reasons, one of which is its penchant for inviting prominent guest stars. The third season welcomed back Stephen Tobolowsky and introduced Vikki Lawrence, while in the most recent episode, Jeff Ross made an appearance to roast George Lopez. Interestingly enough, it was Ross who found himself on the floor, rolling with laughter during the roast. In a chat with TopMob, Boy Meets World alum and burgeoning TV director Danielle Fishel shared her thoughts about this episode and the experience of working alongside Ross on set!
In the episode titled “Lopez vs. The Roast of George Lopez,” it seemed fitting to invite Jeff Ross, famously known as the “Roastmaster General,” given his real-life reputation. After delivering a joke at Netflix’s Roast of Tom Brady (which was said to have struck a nerve with the former NFL star), he joined the NBC sitcom, taking on the role of “Jeff,” George’s old friend, eager to join in the roasting. (You can stream the episode with a Peacock subscription.)
In the third season of “Lopez vs. Lopez“, Danielle Fishel resumed her role, having directed episodes during the first two seasons. She divulged to me some intriguing behind-the-scenes details regarding Ross’s guest stint on the show.
1) Jeff was absolutely amazing, and I’ve kept in contact with him. In fact, we spoke earlier today. It was a pleasure having him on the show. The audience didn’t know it at the time, but he was secretly preparing for his surprise appearance in the episode. He has a knack for making people laugh out loud!
Discuss an exciting twist for fans of Lopez vs. Lopez, who expected a typical episode recording, but instead found Jeff Ross making an appearance! I can’t help but wonder how convenient it was for the cast that their characters were supposed to be laughing at George’s roasts, allowing them to contain their genuine laughter during the antics on camera. As per Danielle Fishel, it was the youngest member of the cast who left the guest star utterly stunned with their reaction!
Among my most cherished memories during our collaboration with Jeff was an instance that may not have made it to the final broadcast since it might have diverted the audience’s attention. I believe it was Brice [Gonzalez] who was responsible for this moment. During the George Lopez roast, Brice stood up and delivered a joke that left Jeff in stitches. The laughter was so contagious that Jeff actually tumbled out of his chair onto the floor, and we all erupted into uncontrollable laughter.
As a dedicated admirer, I must say that Brice Gonzalez flawlessly portrays Chance, the spirited young son of Mayan and Quentin. It seems that the art of making comedy greats like Jeff Ross chuckle knows no bounds when it comes to age! Danielle Fishel couldn’t help but praise him for his hilarious performance.
He’s simply exceptional at roasting, and it was a genuine privilege to have him present. The cast was ecstatic, and they couldn’t get enough of him throughout the day, continually asking, ‘Can you refine my jokes? Can you refine my jokes?’ Consequently, he graciously assisted everyone in making the roast as outstanding as it could be.
Vicki Lawrence and Stephen Tobolowsky have shared their experiences working with George Lopez, revealing what took them by surprise; it’s clear that Jeff Ross played a significant role in supporting the cast for Lopez vs. Lopez, and his presence was also a delightful bonus for the studio audience. Additionally, a roast of a renowned figure like George Lopez wouldn’t be complete without someone skilled in the art – enter our master craftsman.
Both George Lopez and creator Debby Wolfe had comments on Jeff Ross’ Instagram post about his arrival on the series, and they’re definitely positive:
- George Lopez: “SALUTE 🫡 TO THE ROASTMASTER GENERAL!!”
- Debby Wolfe: “All hail the roastmaster! Thanks for joining us! 🔥🔥🔥”
Although Jeff Ross’s future on Lopez vs. Lopez is uncertain, fresh episodes of the sitcom will keep airing every Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC after new installments of Reba McIntyre’s show, Happy’s Place. You can catch up with the comedy the following day by subscribing to Peacock, and both seasons one and two are accessible through a Peacock subscription or Netflix. Keep an eye out for “Lopez vs. Friends,” directed by Danielle Fishel, which airs on November 15!
