As a long-time Amazon Prime subscriber and avid fan of their streaming services, I must admit that the news about Freevee‘s demise has left me a bit puzzled, much like trying to find the right remote control among the pile of cushions on my couch.
Freevee, Amazon’s free ad-supported streaming service, is being shut down.
According to insider information, Amazon is reportedly planning to merge its Freevee platform with Prime Video. It’s anticipated that the management team from Freevee will be assimilated into different departments within the company. The programming offered by Freevee will continue to be accessible at no cost for users who don’t subscribe to Prime Video, which comes as part of an Amazon Prime membership.
As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “Hey gamers, I’ve got some good news! We’re streamlining the viewing experience for you. From now on, you won’t see Freevee branding popping up while you watch your favorite shows. The content you enjoy as a Prime member remains unchanged, and there’s still a massive selection of free streaming content available for non-Prime members. This includes some awesome originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a mix of licensed movies and series, and a wide range of FAST channels. You can find all this great stuff right here on Prime Video!
Freevee, formerly known as IMDb TV, was rebranded in April 2022 to differentiate it more clearly from Amazon’s online database, which it also owns. Sadly, Freevee is no longer available, having ceased operations approximately ten months after Prime Video introduced an ad-supported tier in late January 2022. Prior to this change, Prime Video was a subscription video on demand (SVOD) service without ads. Now, Prime Video users who wish to stream ad-free content must pay an extra $3 per month.
It’s possible that the introduction of Prime Video’s advertising feature, combined with the ease of accessing Freevee shows through Prime, could make Freevee less necessary or useful.
Previously, Amazon had been making its original shows like “Jury Duty” and “Bosch: Legacy” available to Prime Video subscribers. On the other hand, Freevee was broadcasting over a hundred Amazon originals such as “A League of Their Own” and “The Wheel of Time”.
