As a die-hard NCIS fan with over two decades of binge-watching under my belt, let me express my excitement about the latest developments in NCIS: Origins. The introduction of Tobias Fornell’s younger counterpart, played by Lucas Dixon, has truly sent shivers down my spine. I mean, who would have thought that one day we’d see a pre-Joe Spano Fornell? It’s like unwrapping a Christmas present on the Fourth of July!
Warning: SPOILERS for the NCIS: Origins episode “Incognito” are ahead!
Mariel Molino was initially cast as Lala Dominguez in the upcoming prequel series, NCIS: Origins. Prior to its air date in 2024, Austin Stowell, who plays the lead role, confirmed that Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Lala won’t be romantic interests. However, at the end of the first episode, an older Mark Harmon as Gibbs hinted that he was reminiscing about this time in his life because it involved a significant person named “her,” which appears to refer to Lala.
Since then, Lala and Gibbs have been developing their relationship, and this week’s episode titled “Incognito” further deepened their connection. Molina and Gina Lucita Monreal, co-creator of Origins, have hinted at what lies ahead for these two. However, before we discuss future developments, let’s first focus on the established NCIS character who appeared in the “Incognito” episode.
Tobias Fornell Cameoed On NCIS: Origins
This week’s episode centered around the mysterious death of Petty Officer Second Class Greg Piccolo, who managed the classifiers at the Naval Weapons Station. Initially, it appeared that Piccolo had taken his own life, but it was later discovered that he had actually stolen a microfiche containing the latest designs for Tomahawk missiles. Piccolo was in cahoots with someone named Baker to facilitate the transfer of this sensitive information, however, Baker arranged for one of his subordinates to murder Piccolo and stage the scene to make it seem like a suicide.
In a Mexican eatery, Mike Franks and Cliff Wheeler, leader of NIS’s Camp Pendleton division, had a clandestine meeting with one of Wheeler’s FBI contacts regarding Piccolo. Joining them was another FBI agent named Tobias, who happens to be the younger version of Tobias Fornell, a character played by Joe Spano on NCIS since its debut in 2003. Interestingly, Tobias Fornell has never aspired to become a series regular but is one of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ closest friends. In NCIS: Origins, Tobias Fornell is portrayed by Lucas Dixon, who has previously appeared on shows such as Blindspot and The Tick. Now that the younger Fornell has been introduced in this prequel, we eagerly await the moment when he and Stowell’s Gibbs will cross paths and develop their distinctive relationship.
Lala And Gibbs Are About To Become Closer
To get hold of the Tomahawk microfiche, Gibbs and Lala assumed disguises and infiltrated an exclusive club to encounter Baker. Gibbs portrayed himself as Samuel Rhodes, the individual who’d asked about the blueprints, while Lala played the part of Rhodes’ girlfriend. Unfortunately, their identities were exposed, but they successfully acquired the blueprints and arrested Baker and his associates. However, assuming the alias “Incognito” was a challenge for Lala on a private, emotional level.
In my gaming world, as I stepped back into the role of Mariel Molino’s character, I found myself feeling cornered, both in terms of my professional life and my personal relationships. The former was evident through the sexism and toxicity from my colleagues at NIS, while the latter stemmed from my boyfriend moving in with me, which culminated in a moment of weakness outside a bar with a stranger.
As the footage we’ve collected progresses, she finds herself developing more profound feelings for Gibbs, which becomes increasingly unsettling for her. Yet, this development is beautiful as it stems from a desire to safeguard him and stand by his side genuinely.
It’s likely that Lala Dominguez will play a significant, although complex, role in Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ life. Interestingly, she wasn’t introduced during Gibbs’ long-standing tenure as the main character on NCIS, which is why; according to Mark Harmon’s portrayal of the character, this part of his story remains untold. Gina Lucita Monreal hinted that Lala’s background forms the core mystery in NCIS: Origins, stating it as “the big question”.
The central enigma surrounding her situation is what we’re constantly discussing in our writer’s room, as it carries a lot of intrigue and suspense. Each day, we eagerly brainstorm ways to unravel this mystery, revealing unexpected plot twists and ensuring a satisfying conclusion.
Monreal assures us that the series NCIS: Origins will provide some clarification on this enigma before the extended Season 1 concludes. As soon as these insights are unveiled, we’ll make sure to keep you informed. For now, be reminded that Origins, along with every other show in the NCIS franchise, can be accessed through a subscription to Paramount+.
