Amazon Freevee to Shut Down; Content Will Migrate to Prime Video

As an old-timer who’s seen more streaming services than I care to remember, I must say I’m not entirely surprised by Amazon’s decision to merge Freevee with Prime Video. It’s like watching a cat chase its tail – eventually, it just gets tired and sits down.

Amazon’s free streaming service IMDb TV, which you’ve been enjoying, will soon disappear from your screens as it merges with Amazon Prime Video. Known earlier as Freevee, this ad-supported platform, similar to Tubi and Pluto TV, is set to close down. Launched in 2019, Freevee initially offered a variety of free content with ads. In 2022, it was rebranded and started expanding its library of original shows, adding series such as Judy Justice and Bosch: Legacy, alongside popular licensed programs and movies.

Essentially, Amazon has been moving towards offering free streaming content alongside its existing paid service, Prime Video, as part of a broader strategy to expand in the free streaming market. Recently, they have added an ad-supported tier to Prime Video and are now planning to strengthen their content offerings outside the paywall with Freevee, aiming for a more seamless viewer experience. This shift was likely inevitable given ongoing changes in Amazon’s online services. (Deadline reports on this development.)

Amazon Studios has been heavily funding its exclusive content for subscribers, notably series like “The Rings of Power,” “The Boys,” and “Fallout.” By incorporating Freevee’s collection of free shows into Prime Video, there’s a strong chance it will attract more viewers to the platform. Some might find enough appealing content behind the paywall to upgrade to a paid subscription. In the long run, this move appears to be a logical choice.

So far, there’s no information about how shows being produced for Freevee will be affected, but all existing content will remain free on Prime Video. For Freevee users, this change means that Amazon’s extensive library will replace the dedicated free platform, requiring some effort to find your favorite movies that don’t have a price tag amidst the numerous titles available.

Amazon’s Explanation of the Closure of Freevee

Amazon Freevee to Shut Down; Content Will Migrate to Prime Video

The content on Freevee remains accessible at no cost, but closing it down aims to enhance and simplify the viewing experience for our audience. As stated by an Amazon representative.

We’ve transformed Prime Video into a one-stop hub for entertainment, allowing customers to tailor their viewing experience by streaming exclusive content from Amazon MGM Studios (as a Prime member), licensed movies and shows, additional services as an added subscription, live sports, blockbuster films and series for rental or purchase, FAST Channels, and all of the free content offered on Amazon Freevee. To streamline the viewing process for our customers, we’re phasing out the Freevee branding. This change won’t affect the content available to Prime members, and a wealth of free streaming content will still be accessible to non-Prime members, including Originals from Amazon MGM Studios, various licensed movies and shows, and a wide range of FAST Channels – all on Prime Video.

In the coming days, you’ll notice updates to the Freevee service in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Austria. The Freevee logo will gradually disappear, and content from the Freevee library will now be identified as “Watch for Free” on the detail pages for viewers who don’t have a Prime Video subscription.
