Jamie Lee Curtis Leaves X Amid Mass Exodus From Platform

As a seasoned movie buff with a lifetime of watching tales unfold on the silver screen and observing the real-life dramas that play out in Hollywood, I can’t help but draw parallels between the current state of Elon Musk’s Twitter (X) and a classic cautionary tale. It seems we have reached the point where characters are fleeing the town as quickly as their virtual horses can carry them, leaving behind a once-vibrant community now plagued by chaos and questionable leadership.

Jamie Lee Curtis, renowned for battling cinematic terrors as a distinguished Scream Queen, seems to have found a fear she can’t confront anymore – Elon Musk’s social media platform X, previously known as Twitter. The actress has become the latest high-profile figure in Hollywood to leave X following concerns that it has transformed into an allegedly toxic atmosphere under the management of tech-mogul, entrepreneur, and now political figure, Elon Musk, during Donald Trump’s administration.

Curtis shared on her Instagram a picture of her former account handle, which has been deactivated, accompanied by a caption that quotes the Serenity Prayer, originally attributed to theologian Reinhold Niebuhr and often used in Alcoholics Anonymous. This quote can be interpreted as a sign that X, whatever it may be, could potentially be an addiction from which she’s seeking liberation, as it has evolved into something unfamiliar or unrecognizable to many.

Since Elon Musk assumed control over X, many celebrities have been discussing their intention to leave, with his increasing involvement in American politics and strong support for Donald Trump escalating the situation further. Trump has recently appointed Musk as head of the Department of Government Efficiency, along with Vivek Ramaswamy, with the aim of reducing government bureaucracy and regulations, as they claim. This political backing might be the reason behind this appointment.

Thousands Are Beginning To Depart X For Other Platforms

Many famous figures and ordinary people have chosen to leave X, or plan to do so soon. Notably, Bette Midler deactivated her account on the night of the election when Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris to become the U.S. President. In a related development, The Guardian announced through Deadline that they would no longer be active on the platform. They explained this decision to their readers by stating, “We believe that the advantages of being on X are now overshadowed by the disadvantages, and our resources could be better allocated towards promoting our journalism elsewhere.” Furthermore, they highlighted that X has become a harmful platform that appears to support conspiracy theories and is being leveraged by Musk to further his political views.

Some well-known users who have departed X recently include National Public Radio (NPR), who left last year, and the Berlin Film Festival, who announced this week their intention to leave at the end of the year. It’s possible that more users may choose to leave X in the future, as there are whispers that Musk is planning to combine the platform with Truth Social – a social media service owned by Trump and introduced in 2022 following his ban from Twitter prior to Musk’s takeover of and rebranding of the platform.

A recent exploration of platform X, beyond the now familiar algorithm reminiscent of Trump, reveals users discussing their preferred alternatives after departing from X. Notable options include Bluesky (initiated by the former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey), Mastodon, and Threads, which currently boasts 275 million monthly users as of October 2024. Post-election, Bluesky gained approximately 700,000 new users, suggesting these alternative platforms could expand further. This growth is anticipated given the desire for a platform that doesn’t push specific agendas, discussions, or misinformation onto its users.
