As a fan who has admired the remarkable journey of Niija Kuykendall in the film industry, I am saddened yet inspired by her decision to depart from Netflix after three impactful years. Her tenure has been marked by groundbreaking collaborations with esteemed talents like Tyler Perry, Denzel Washington, and Malcolm Washington, just to name a few.
Netflix film executive Niija Kuykendall is departing the company after three years.
In October 2021, the vice president of films joined a streaming platform and specialized in movies that catered to genres like faith-based, young adult, and holidays. However, she is expected to leave her position at the end of the year after going through a transition phase.
Upcoming projects feature Tyler Perry’s movie titled “The Six Triple Eight“, in which Kerry Washington plays a role, portraying the only Women’s Army Corps unit of color during World War II. Additionally, there is Malcolm Washington’s directorial debut, an adaptation of August Wilson’s play called “The Piano Lesson“.
Netflix’s Vice President of Film, Doug Belgrad, stated that Niija’s innovative collaborations with esteemed filmmakers such as Tyler Perry, Denzel and Malcolm Washington, David Yates, among others, have significantly shaped our upcoming movie lineup. I would like to express my gratitude for her numerous contributions, which include films like The Piano Lesson, The Deliverance, The Six Triple Eight, Pain Hustlers, and Mea Culpa.
Since Scott Stuber stepped down from his role as Netflix’s film head earlier this year and Dan Lin took over, Kuykendall decided to make a change too.)
I transitioned to Netflix following a notable stint at Warner Bros. that kicked off in 2008. During my tenure there, I ascended to the position of Executive Vice President of Production and was instrumental in bringing to life several esteemed projects. These included the Academy Award-winning drama “Judas and the Black Messiah,” the critically acclaimed remake of “A Star Is Born” by Bradley Cooper from 2018, and the horror hits “It” and its sequel.
As a passionate advocate, I’m proud to be associated with Kuykendall, who lends their voice actively to diversity and representation efforts. They even sit on the esteemed board of Women in Film, demonstrating their commitment to this essential cause.
