How Thor 2 Almost Had A Huge (And Bonkers) Connection To Deadpool 3

How Thor 2 Almost Had A Huge (And Bonkers) Connection To Deadpool 3

As a die-hard Marvel fan who’s witnessed the rise and fall of many a superhero, I must say that the journey to bring Deadpool into the MCU has been nothing short of rollercoaster ride. The sheer number of wild concepts they considered for Deadpool 3 is mind-boggling! A frame-for-frame remake of Thor: The Dark World? Now that’s a proposition that would have made even Loki crack up in his Asgardian prison cell!

Introducing Deadpool into the Marvel Studios universe was undeniably a significant move, given his unparalleled popularity and success among Fox/Marvel characters. It was practically inevitable that he’d be part of the MCU. However, deciding on the best way to introduce him wasn’t straightforward.

It’s been five long years since Disney acquired Fox, and it seems they had quite a challenge deciding on the best approach for Deadpool 3. Introducing Wolverine certainly proved to be a smart move, but in the recently released Marvel Assembled documentary on Deadpool & Wolverine (only available with a Disney+ subscription), producer Wendy Jacobson shares some of the outlandish ideas that were initially considered. And boy, were they something else!

The other day, I was flipping through my notes, revisiting some wild concepts we’d brainstormed. Remember when we discussed a frame-by-frame remake of Thor: The Dark World, but only up until halfway through? We were planning to insert Deadpool into the story then, sending it off on an entirely new path. Our plan was to create a Deadpool’s Deleted Scenes Extravaganza, aiming to prove that he’d been in the Marvel Cinematic Universe all along, even though his scenes were left on the editing room floor. We were trying hard to find a purpose for this movie, something that would make it unique and exciting.

It’s quite intriguing to imagine a revamp of the film “Thor: The Dark World“, often criticized as a low point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One can only speculate if this concept might have inspired the emotional scene where Thor cries, which later piqued Deadpool’s interest due to its similarity to Loki’s “apparent death” scene in the original movie.

Besides these, the documentary presents other plausible ideas as well. One of them is “Deadpool and the Tramp,” where Deadpool and Peter were to be featured. Another was “Deadpool Fiction,” a film that would’ve starred Deadpool alongside Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. Reynolds also mentioned his idea for “Deadpool 3” as a low-budget, action-less movie, similar to an indie film at Sundance.

It appears they chose not to directly title the new movie “Deadpool 3” because the concept of producing a third film focused solely on Deadpool had always been off the table. Instead, Deadpool’s presence within the Marvel Cinematic Universe required a compelling justification beyond mere financial success.

Gladly, I stumbled upon the reason behind it. As Hugh Jackman shared in the Assembled documentary, even though I had been contemplating hanging up my Wolverine claws after Logan, it was me who felt drawn to star in a Deadpool movie. The timing couldn’t have been better as Ryan Reynolds hinted he was running out of fresh ideas and thought he had made his “last pitch.

Everything turned out splendidly, with Deadpool and Wolverine’s film now being the highest-earning live-action movie of this year. It’s restored the Marvel Cinematic Universe to its dominant position in the film industry. Given how Thor: The Dark World’s remake might have fared, it appears improbable that it would have achieved such success.
