Sophie Turner in Talks to Topline Amazon’s ‘Tomb Raider’ Series

As a fan who grew up with the iconic Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider series, I am absolutely thrilled about Sophie Turner potentially stepping into these legendary boots! Her grit, determination, and undeniable talent, showcased so brilliantly as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, make her an ideal candidate to embody Lara Croftoff in this exciting new venture.

Sophie Turner is almost securing the sought-after position as the real-life Lara Croft, the renowned British archaeologist, in Amazon MGM Studios and Crystal Dynamics’ film version of the popular action-adventure game titled “Tomb Raider”.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is penning and overseeing the production of a live-action series that was greenlit in the spring and will be available on Amazon’s Prime Video. Sophie Turner, who gained fame as Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, is reportedly in discussions to star in the main role, which was played by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in movie adaptations of the video game series.

Back in October, I found myself among a group of talented British actresses vying for a coveted role. Among them was Turner, who’s known for her captivating performances. Mackenzie Davis, the American star from ‘Station Eleven’, was the only one from across the pond to make it to the final round. Emma Mackey, famous for her work in ‘Sex Education’, and Lucy Boynton, best recognized from ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, were also rumored to have been part of this intense competition, as per reliable sources.

Amazon declined comment.

Waller-Bridge is overseeing the production of this series alongside her partner at Wells Street Productions, Jenny Robbins, Dmitri M. Johnson from dj2 Entertainment, Michael Scheel and Legendary Television. Ryan Andolina, who used to head comedy and drama at Amazon, as well as Amanda Greenblatt, a former head of overall deals, are serving as consulting producers via their Star Party banner.

When the series was announced in May, Waller-Bridge (known for Fleabag, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) expressed that if she could tell her younger self about this, she believes it would be overwhelming. She has a deep connection with Tomb Raider as it’s significantly impacted her life. Feeling incredibly fortunate to work on bringing it to television alongside passionate colleagues, she’s excited to embark on this journey – bats included.

Amazon is heavily investing in the Tomb Raider franchise, not just producing a movie, but also creating a video game as part of a significant agreement with Johnson’s dj2. This deal aims to merge different forms and platforms into a single, interconnected narrative. At present, Waller-Bridge is only associated with the TV series for this project.

Turner’s roles following “Game of Thrones” are diverse, including the limited series “The Staircase” on a streaming platform, the Netflix film “Do Revenge”, and the ITV/CW miniseries “Joan”. Additionally, she will appear in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming thriller titled “Haven”.
