As a seasoned movie reviewer with a penchant for action-adventure sagas and a soft spot for iconic video game adaptations, I must say that the casting of Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider series has me positively thrilled.
Excitedly, I can’t wait to see the new Tomb Raider series on Amazon Prime Video! After much speculation, it looks like Sophie Turner from Game of Thrones has been chosen to embody Lara Croft. Following a few unsuccessful attempts at rejuvenating the franchise on the big screen, Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge plans to adapt the video game with Sophie Turner in the starring role. I’m eagerly anticipating this fresh take on an iconic character!
According to Deadline, Sophie Turner has secured the role of Lara Croft in Prime Video’s Tomb Raider series, winning out over Lucy Boynton from Bohemian Rhapsody during the audition process. Previously portrayed by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, Turner adds her name to a distinguished group of actresses who have played Lara Croft in live-action adaptations. While details about the project are still limited, there appears to be great enthusiasm among those involved for bringing this iconic character to life while staying true to the beloved video game series.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who’s known for her love of the franchise, publicly expressed it when the show was given the go-ahead by Amazon. This series is part of the multi-project agreement she previously sealed with the studio. Following the success of Fleabag, Waller-Bridge has now turned her attention to a pre-existing series that comes with its own set of challenges, rather than creating something new.
If only I could let my teenage self know about this, she’d be overjoyed! Being part of bringing Tomb Raider to TV is such a significant part of my life, and working with these dedicated partners makes it even more special. Lara Croft holds great importance for me, as she does for many others, and I’m excited for the journey ahead, including all the bats!
‘Tomb Raider’ Joins Amazon’s Growing Video Game Adaptations
Amazon has ventured into the realm of adapting video games with significant success. Recently, Prime Video premiered the highly praised “Fallout” and is now working on its second season. In addition, they are developing a series based on “God of War,” which recently underwent a creative revamp. They also have an anticipated “Mass Effect” adaptation in the works, believed to be their sci-fi equivalent of “Game of Thrones.” The status of the “Tomb Raider” series is uncertain, but with Sophie Turner cast as the lead character, it’s certainly generating buzz. Production might start as early as next year, potentially for a 2026 release date, though this is purely speculative.
Instead of Prime Video preparing to launch their own Tomb Raider adaptation, Netflix has already released an animated series featuring Hayley Atwell. Previous live-action versions didn’t receive favorable reviews from critics, but the Netflix show, titled Tomb Raider: Legend of Lara Croft, earned a Rotten Tomatoes score of 67%, the highest in the franchise. Reactions to the series have been mostly positive to mixed, with hopes that Amazon’s version might generate even more positive feedback for the globe-trotting heroine. The popular video game franchise was successfully rebooted in 2013, but its live-action adaptations continue to search for solid ground.
