The Lost City Ending, Explained

The Lost City Ending, Explained

As a seasoned movie-goer with a penchant for unraveling complex narratives, I must say that “The Lost City” is a delightful romp from start to finish. The characters are well-developed, and the plot twists keep you guessing until the very end.

The Misplaced Metropolis is a thrilling romantic comedy that offers something for everyone. Since its release on Netflix, it has become more accessible to many viewers, and as a result, it has climbed up Netflix’s list of Top 10 movies in just a week. This 2022 film has garnered considerable attention since its debut.

The movie titled “The Lost City” revolves around the character of Loretta Sage, portrayed by Sandra Bullock, who writes adventurous novels about a treasure-hunting duo, Dr. Angela Lovemore and her partner Dash McMann. In these novels, Dash is depicted as an attractive, academically accomplished man. However, in reality, the role of Dash is played by Alan, a model for Channing Tatum’s cover, who may not be as scholarly but certainly has the looks. Interestingly, Loretta finds herself drawn to this less refined yet very attractive individual despite her initial disdain.

However, when Loretta is abducted by Daniel Radcliffe’s character, Abigail Fairfax – a person harboring intense jealousy due to her brother taking control of the Fairfax family’s powerful company instead of her – Alan makes every effort to rescue her… although his attempts might not always be successful.

The Plot of The Lost City

As a passionate moviegoer, I’d rephrase that sentence like this: In the film titled “The Lost City”, my adventure begins when Loretta gets abducted. Desperate to find her, Alan finds himself at a standstill due to his lack of a vehicle to trail her. He visits Loretta’s publisher, Beth (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), seeking guidance, and eventually contacts his trainer – none other than the suave Jack Trainer. Incidentally, this Jack Trainer character is portrayed by the dashing Brad Pitt, who just happens to excel in rescuing kidnap victims and maintaining an irresistible charm. (“My father was a weatherman,” he explains.)

Meanwhile, as Alan is preoccupied calling for Trainer, Loretta is attempting to decipher a fragment of parchment adorned with symbols, which was recently discovered by Abigail Fairfax within the ruins of a hidden city on an Atlantic island. Although Abigail has located the city, he hasn’t yet found the tomb that contains the crown of fire, a valuable artifact. Loretta, who regards herself as an archaeologist before a romance writer, might be capable of translating the symbols; however, she doesn’t wish to assist Abigail with this task. Consequently, when Trainer arrives to save her alongside Alan, she agrees to accompany them.

As Trainer was fatally wounded by a gunshot to the head following his rescue of Loretta, Loretta and Alan persistently evaded capture from Abigail’s followers. They faced numerous challenges along their journey, such as their car plunging off a cliff, encounters with leeches, skin irritations, and skillfully avoiding the motorbikes pursuing them. However, by the time they reached the third act of the movie, Loretta had been abducted once more by Abigail, forcing Alan to embark on another rescue mission.

What’s Inside the Infamous Tomb?

In the third part of “The Lost City”, events escalate as Abigail snatches Loretta in his tank, with Alan witnessing her being pulled away. Desperate to catch up, he manages to secure a motorcycle by offering his watch. Pursuing the tank, Alan hops on board and engages in a struggle with the men atop the vehicle, while Loretta tries to regain control within the tank itself.

In the end, neither of them achieve success, and under duress, Abigail coerces Alan to convince Loretta to guide them to the tomb. Upon learning from a singer that the “well of tears,” which Abigail had translated from her symbols, is a real location instead of a metaphor as initially believed, Loretta reveals its whereabouts to them.

Upon their arrival, they venture into a cave and discover an entrance to a tunnel. Loretta and her companions proceed through it and eventually stumble upon the location where the treasure is said to be hidden. Abigail is taken aback, as he had imagined it would be a grand memorial for the deceased man’s power. However, Loretta, who lost her husband five years ago and has since been largely reclusive, comprehends that this tomb was not built for such purposes. Instead, it serves as a quiet, solitary place for the widow to mourn.

Despite his initial expectations, Abigail continues to search for the headdress he had originally sought. Upon entering the tomb, he discovers… a headdress adorned with seashells. It holds no monetary worth. What Abigail perceives as no treasure at all, Loretta comprehends: the true value of the tomb lies in the love of the woman who crafted it.

The Climax and the Coda

In this new development, Abigail becomes enraged and, as the crypt begins to tremble like a restless volcano, he along with his associate, Rafi (Hector Anibal), imprison Loretta and Alan within the crypt. It later transpires that even Rafi is displeased with Abigail’s actions, leading him to desert Abigail in the cave. Interestingly, Rafi also leaves behind a crowbar, providing Loretta and Alan a means of escaping from the tomb.

After realizing she has secluded herself from life, Loretta, in the company of Alan, swims out from the cave into the open sea, where they are rescued by Beth on a patrol boat. Following their rescue, Abigail is apprehended and they embark on a journey to an idyllic island retreat.

In an unexpected turn of events, Loretta and Alan find themselves in a yoga class, where lo and behold, Jack Trainer appears! It’s amazing that he survived the gunshot wound to his head. He attributes this to the myth that we only utilize 10% of our brains (which is false, but for the sake of this film, let’s ignore this fact). Instead, he suggests that he has shifted to another 10%. While he still needs to work through some lingering anger and resentment, overall, he seems to be doing well.

The scene switches to black, yet it’s tough not to ponder what Trainer’s back looks like after that surprising reveal. Similarly, it’s hard not to speculate how long Loretta will keep Alan company, given his lower intelligence compared to hers – and as she put it, she’s drawn to intelligence. However, the movie does hint that Alan is quite wealthy, so he might stay for a while longer.
