As a movie buff with over three decades of film-watching under my belt and a particular fondness for animated adventures, I must say I find myself torn between excitement and apprehension regarding the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon.

In real life now, the live-action version of “How to Train Your Dragon” has become a reality, and its main character has been officially unveiled for the first time. Previously given voice by Jay Baruchel in the initial animated movie, Mason Thames will step into the role for the upcoming remake directed by Dean DeBlois. For those anticipating an exact replica of the original, it appears that “How to Train Your Dragon” will remain true to the first film and meet those expectations.

Mason Thames has been unveiled as Hiccup in the upcoming live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, and the image released suggests a faithful recreation of the beloved animated film. Though Toothless, the main dragon character, is absent from the picture, Hiccup is shown decked out in battle gear, poised for combat with mythical creatures. A trailer is expected to be screened in cinemas soon, offering more insight into the movie, but this initial glimpse should suffice to spark enthusiasm among fans of the series and possibly convert critics of live-action remakes.

Despite the image appearing identical to the initial scene, Dean DeBlois, the director of “How to Train Your Dragon”, acknowledges that the live-action version has distinct elements. He explained, “It’s amplified in terms of intensity – a believable, photoreal dragon rampaging and attempting to destroy him.” This refers to the scene where Hiccup confronts the dragon in the arena. We eagerly await footage of this sequence to evaluate how well the live-action remake compares to the original.

In essence, although the initial snapshot from the updated version of How to Train Your Dragon stays true, there’s still debate about whether it’s essential to recreate each shot of a movie that has already found a cherished place in our hearts. This dilemma also applies to the live-action remake of The Lion King, which continues to grapple with this question, as well as its upcoming prequel, Mufasa. For those who may have missed the original animated movie due to its format, the live-action version might hold more appeal. However, for fans of the animated film series and its TV adaptations, a remake could seem far less enticing.

There’s no denying the sense of anticipation that surrounds the live-action adaptation of How to Train your Dragon, given its impressive ensemble cast made up of both fresh and familiar faces. The film’s supporting roles will be taken by Nico Parker as Astrid, Gerard Butler as Stoick, Nick Frost as Gobber, Julian Dennison as Fishlegs, Gabriel Howell as Snotlout, Bronwyn James as Ruffnut, Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut, and Ruth Codd as Phlegma.

Currently, Mason Thames is being considered as an ideal choice for the character Hiccup, and it’s challenging to find fault with this decision so far. Director Dean DeBlois sees Hiccup as a protagonist who embodies all the misfits out there, and many of us can relate. This is one of the reasons, among others, that Thames was selected for the role. “There was an element of discomfort yet vulnerability about him, which became apparent when he was 15 during auditions.” This is high praise indeed for someone who will be carrying a significant burden of expectations.
