As a long-time fanatic of Grey’s Anatomy, I must admit that the latest developments have left me reeling! The unexpected departures of Levi Schmitt and his beau James, the hospital chaplain, were certainly surprising twists. However, I am hopeful about Jake Borelli’s idea for a spinoff titled “Holy Schmitt.” If it materializes, it would indeed be a divine addition to the Grey’s universe!
⚠️ Warning: The story that follows contains significant spoilers for the Grey’s Anatomy episode “If You Leave” from November 14. If you haven’t seen it yet and want to, you can stream past episodes with a Hulu subscription.
It was anticipated that some cast members from “Grey’s Anatomy” would be leaving when the 21st season aired on the 2024 TV schedule, but Thursday’s emotional episode “If You Leave” brought about more departures than expected. As we prepare for next week’s fall finale, we’re left wondering if Levi Schmitt will return to visit Jo as he promised, given that Jake Borelli, who plays the character, has shared insights on his character’s future. One intriguing possibility he mentioned was a potential spinoff.
Jake Borelli Talks Potential Future Return To Grey’s Anatomy
In a surprising turn of events during the November 14 episode, Levi confessed his growing feelings for hospital chaplain James (Michael Thomas Grant), proposing that they move to Texas together instead of maintaining a long-distance relationship. Immediately, James resigned from his job at the hospital, effectively doubling the departures from Grey’s Anatomy. THR inquired if we could expect more of them in the future, and actor Jake Borelli expressed optimism, hinting at potential further developments.
Here’s hoping for the best! There seems to be plenty of potential for further development, so let’s wait and see—perhaps it could even branch off into a Texas-based series. I’ve been subtly pitching this project behind closed doors. My working title is “Holy Schmitt.
It’s unclear if Jake Borelli is truly spearheading this spinoff, but if he is, it would be a brilliant move. Given the success of the Hot Priest from Fleabag and the Hot Rabbi from Nobody Wants This, Michael Thomas Grant should definitely explore the concept further, especially with the potential for a Hot Chaplain character. And oh, that title? Simply perfect! (chef’s kiss)
It is possible that the plan doesn’t work out as expected, but Jake Borelli envisions a scenario where Levi will return to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in some role, perhaps just to visit his close friend Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) when she delivers her twins. He shared this thought with Deadline.
I’m quite optimistic that we’ll see Levi again. There’s definitely a lot of curiosity among the audience about what Levi has been doing, and I share that curiosity myself. With all his connections at the hospital, as you pointed out, Jo, it’s hard to imagine those newborn babies arriving without Levi somehow making it work to be there.
Spoken like the most devoted godfather! Either way, Jake Borelli’s character got to go out on a super high note, proving how good of a doctor he’s become and (with a little help from a near-death helicopter experience) finding his passion for pediatrics. The actor continued:
We’ll observe how [showrunner Meg Marinis] shapes the series. It’s an exciting prospect for us to witness his personal development away from the cameras, and later have him return as the powerful figure we anticipate. Let’s wait and see what lies ahead for the show.
Regarding the upcoming episodes of the series, it’s not just Levi and James who met their end in “If You Leave,” but also Mika Yasuda’s fate remains uncertain, leaving us pondering about her future role in the storyline.
Mika Yasuda Survives The Crash But Suffers A Major Loss
Before Season 21 began, it was revealed that Midori Francis would reappear briefly to conclude her character’s storyline. Given the severe car accident involving her character in the recent cliffhanger, I had concerns about Mika being written off the show. Thankfully, she made it through the latest episode, albeit barely. Unfortunately, her sister, Chloe Yasuda (portrayed by Julia Rose), did not survive. The combined trauma of the accident and the chemotherapy she had recently undergone proved too much for her body to endure.
Unexpectedly, Chloe left us too quickly, and it’s painful to learn that Mika’s departure from the show is still looming. Don’t miss out on ABC at 10 p.m. ET this Thursday, November 21, to find out more about Mika, particularly her connection with Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane), as we seek answers in the fall finale.
