‘Lord of the Rings’ Star John Rhys-Davies Open to Return But Only With CGI

'Lord of the Rings' Star John Rhys-Davies Open to Return But Only With CGI

As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for epic fantasy tales, I must say that hearing John Rhys-Davies consider returning to Middle Earth is nothing short of delightful. The man who brought Gimli, the stalwart Dwarf, to life has always been a favorite, and his potential return in Andy Serkis’ upcoming film, “The Hunt for Gollum,” is certainly an exciting prospect.

In a surprising yet reasonable request for returning to the Lord of the Rings franchise, John Rhys-Davies has set a condition. Many actors from the original trilogy are being approached about reprising their roles in Andy Serkis’ upcoming film, The Hunt for Gollum. This movie is said to be set just before Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) departs from the Shire in The Fellowship of the Ring. Rhys-Davies, who played beloved character Gimli, could potentially make a shocking comeback in The Hunt for Gollum.

In a conversation with Collider, Rhys-Davies expressed his willingness to reprise his role as Gimli in The Hunt for Gollum. However, he is reluctant to don the heavy prosthetics associated with the character once more. “I’ve made it clear I don’t fancy putting on that prosthetic again,” he shared. Rhys-Davies also voiced his admiration for Andy Serkis (the director and star of the film), and suggested he might consider reprising the role, provided there are modifications to the application process. He added:

However, showing respect for Andy, whom I deeply respect and appreciate for their remarkable growth, if they extended an invitation…would it be possible for me to don the makeup once more and endure that transformation, perhaps using computer-generated imagery (CGI) instead of physically altering my appearance?

It may seem unexpected that Rhys-Davies is contemplating a comeback, given his past decision to decline being part of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy. Previously, when they asked him to do The Hobbit, he responded with a firm no. “Not at all,” he said he replied. However, advancements in filmmaking and prosthetics technology have made significant strides recently, and Rhys-Davies mentioned that the only way he could physically reprise his role as Gimli would be through digital techniques. He added:

Reflecting on the advancements we’ve witnessed, if today I don’t need to dedicate an eight-hour daily chunk for three long years, seated in a makeup chair, I might just embrace it. Another aspect is that my body can no longer bear the burden of carrying around eighty pounds of additional gear and scaling mountains.

Which ‘LOTR’ Stars Could Return for ‘The Hunt for Gollum’?

John Rhys-Davies, a former star of “The Lord of the Rings,” isn’t the only actor who’s been asked about reprising his role in “The Hunt for Gollum.” It’s likely that others will also be asked in the future. In June, Andy Serkis hinted that the upcoming film would delve deeply into the title character, and there could potentially be some familiar faces returning to the screen. As more time passes, it seems that former stars of “The Lord of the Rings” are expressing their thoughts on revisiting the cherished cinematic saga.

It seems that Ian McKellen has expressed enthusiasm about reprising his role as Gandalf in future films, though he playfully suggested they shouldn’t delay given his age. Meanwhile, Elijah Wood, a beloved figure among Hobbits (with Samwise taking the top spot), is open to joining The Hunt for Gollum. Contrastingly, Hugo Weaving has indicated that he won’t be returning to Middle-Earth in the upcoming movie, as he feels he’s had enough of it.
