As a dedicated follower of Stephen King‘s digital journey for over a decade, I must admit his departure from X leaves a void that is hard to fill. His unique blend of wit, wisdom, and horror has been a constant source of entertainment and enlightenment. The news of his move to Threads feels like losing touch with an old friend who’s moving towns.
For more than 10 years now, Stephen King has been entertaining his fans on X (formerly Twitter) with movie reviews, book recommendations, political posts, and pictures of his dog Molly, a.k.a. the Thing of Evil. Sadly, like many others, King has decided to leave the social media platform he joined in 2013 after claiming it’s become “too toxic” in the wake of Elon Musk’s takeover in 2022, which has turned the site into a cesspool of hate that seemingly goes unchecked at every turn.
Yesterday, King publicly declared that he’s stepping away, expressing his efforts to remain but finding the “toxic environment” unbearable. He and Molly are moving towards Meta Platforms’ Threads, a social media platform owned by Mark Zuckerberg, which also encompasses Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Notably, King isn’t alone in this decision; Jamie Lee Curtis recently departed as well, sharing a snapshot of her deactivated account on Instagram.
Over the past week, X has experienced a significant departure of users, exceeding 1 million. This migration isn’t just towards Threads, but also Bluesky. This shift is connected with the tech titan’s acquisition of the social media platform a few years back and the recent appointment of Elon Musk by President-elect Donald Trump to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Yes, you read that right! However, this role won’t be an official one. Instead, Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, former presidential candidate, will collaborate with the Office of Management and Budget to provide guidance to the Trump administration on cost-cutting measures.
Stephen King’s Favorite Movies and TV Shows of 2024
As 2024 approaches its end and King departing X, let’s not forget to highlight some of the movies and series he recommended to his fans over the past year. On the television spectrum, he recently showered Apple TV’s Disclaimer with admiration, stating that while the first episode moves slowly, viewers should persist and find themselves hooked. He also suggested exploring Peacock’s newest horror series, Teacup, likening it to Lost and describing it as “odd, eerie, confined, and frightening.
In regards to cinema, King expressed his affection on X for films such as “Rebel Ridge”, “MaXXXine” by Ti West, “A Quiet Place: Day One”, “Under Paris”, the Spanish horror film “The Coffee Table”, and even this year’s controversial Blumhouse release, “Night Swim”. He also voiced his dismay when Greta Gerwig was overlooked for Best Director during the Oscar nominations earlier this year, questioning, “Could that really be true?
While King continues his presence on Threads, his recent departure signifies the conclusion of an epoch that fans who’ve admired him for the past decade eagerly anticipated. They were eager to witness his perspective on current events and the entertainment world. Regrettably, it seems like more celebrities will bid farewell to Musk and X in the near future, and King may not be the last one.
