As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the news that Sophie Turner will be stepping into Lara Croft’s iconic boots and tank top for Amazon Prime’s upcoming “Tomb Raider” series. Having grown up playing the original PlayStation games, the character holds a special place in my heart.
On November 15, 2024, it was announced that Sophie Turner will prepare to portray Lara Croft in an upcoming Amazon Prime “Tomb Raider” series. Since the news is brand new, only our imaginations—with some assistance from AI—can envision her in this role at this time.
I’m thrilled to share that I learned recently about an exciting new series in the works, spearheaded by the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge, creator and lead of “Fleabag.” It seems Amazon greenlit this project back in May. As for my involvement, it looks like I’m among a select few actors who have been considered for a role – I can hardly contain my excitement! The talented Lucy Boynton is also rumored to be in the running, known for her portrayal of Mary Austin in “Bohemian Rhapsody.
Since it has been revealed that Turner will be taking on Lara’s iconic role, complete with boots and tank top, we wanted to imagine what she might look like when she’s actually climbing rocky cliffs and, you know, plundering tombs. To do this, we used the AI-powered image generator Midjourney to create some visual representations.
A modern take on the Tomb Raider?
The first picture seems like a wardrobe trial conducted in a studio, featuring the character we’ve generated as Turner-as-Lara posing against a solid gray backdrop.
2016 saw Turner expressing her enthusiasm for action as she became part of the X-Men universe. Given her previous comments, it seems she would be eager to engage in this upcoming franchise, as she had mentioned during an interview on set, “I can’t wait to experience that level of action since it’s all-out excitement.
In the images provided, AI has converted Turner into a character similar to Lara from the 2013 video game reboot series. This younger version of Lara faces numerous perils and sustains many injuries as she evolves into the seasoned explorer we recognize, across a trilogy of games.
Third time’s the charm
Turner is set to become the third actor to embody Lara Croft in live-action films, following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie. Jolie first brought the character to life in “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” (2001) and “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life” (2003), portraying a seasoned Lara Croft that fans had grown familiar with from the original “Tomb Raider” video game series, which debuted on the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn as early as 1996.
It took 15 years for another “Tomb Raider” movie to be produced, with the 2018 version featuring Alicia Vikander portraying a character reminiscent of the reboot games’ Lara Croft – a fresh, inexperienced archaeologist. Throughout the film, she uses a bow and arrow and sustains numerous scratches, bruises, and wounds.
Originally, there were plans for a follow-up to Vikander’s lead role movie, but the disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic pushed back its release. Eventually, when the studio lost the rights to “Tomb Raider” in July 2022, the film was abandoned, sparking a bidding war among other studios. However, Amazon, which happens to own MGM, secured both TV and film rights for the project in January 2023.
The first actual English Lara
Notably, Turner taking up the role signifies the debut of an English actress portraying the iconic video-game character Brit. Unlike Jolie (an American) and Vikander (a Swede), Turner will be using an English accent for her portrayal of Croft, having done so previously when they played the character.
Turner hasn’t yet voiced her thoughts about being chosen for the role, but Waller-Bridge, another British actress, has shown great enthusiasm about portraying a live-action Lara Croft that stays true to the game. In May 2024 when the series was announced, Waller-Bridge expressed her delight by saying, “Tomb Raider has been a significant part of my life, and I feel incredibly honored to be bringing it to TV with such dedicated team members.” She continued, “Lara Croft holds great significance for me, as she does for many others, and I can’t wait to embark on this journey. Even the bats!
It’s possible that Turner’s portrayal of Lara might resemble the original PlayStation version rather than what Midjourney depictions suggest. Only time will tell.
