‘The Witcher’ Fans Still Have One Reason to Be Excited for the Netflix Show

'The Witcher' Fans Still Have One Reason to Be Excited for the Netflix Show

As a seasoned movie enthusiast and avid gamer with a soft spot for fantasy epics, I find myself intrigued by the upcoming transformation of The Witcher franchise. Having followed the series since its inception, I’ve witnessed the fervor surrounding Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Geralt of Rivia, but now it’s time to give Liam Hemsworth a fair chance.

As The Witcher enters its last two seasons, hardcore fans have repeatedly pointed out that Henry Cavill was the sole actor to portray Geralt of Rivia innumerable times, along with various other challenges confronting the somewhat loose adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s books. However, Cavill is no longer part of the cast (he may be engrossed in filming Space Marine 2), and now Liam Hemsworth steps into the role as the White Wolf. Some have already dismissed Hemsworth and Season 4, but he might just be the lifeline the series requires.

Fans adored Henry Cavill for numerous reasons, not least because he was affectionately known as the internet’s boyfriend. Prior to his role in the show, Cavill was an ardent admirer of the franchise, having reportedly played The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt a dozen times and then immersing himself in the novels. As a result, he is highly regarded as a beacon of light in what has been a waning series. However, it seems that fans are overlooking or choosing to disregard the fact that Liam Hemsworth is also a passionate Witcher fan.

Liam Hemsworth Also Loves The Witcher 3

In contrast to movies, where it’s generally necessary to watch the earlier parts before diving into sequels or prequels, video games like The Witcher often serve as an introduction for many fans, such as Henry Cavill and Liam Hemsworth. This is particularly true for The Witcher, which gained immense popularity through its third installment in the trilogy, The Wild Hunt. Despite Netflix’s show being an adaptation of the games, the games themselves are adaptations of the original books.

On the talk show Live With Kelly and Mark, Liam Hemsworth disclosed that he too became captivated by The Witcher series through the video games. “A while back, I played the game for around ten years or so,” he reminisced. Although his enthusiasm might not match the fervor of Henry Cavill’s die-hard fans, Hemsworth fondly recalled his gaming experience, praising it as one of the all-time greats. He went on to say:

To this very moment, it remains among the greatest video games ever made, and approximately two years back, Netflix approached me with an offer to direct the series, which filled me with excitement since I’m a fan of the game myself.

I’ve gone back to it… a couple of times.

Liam Hemsworth Could Be a Good Geralt of Rivia

Liam Hemsworth, much like many fans, shares a deep affection for the game and the franchise. He has reassured the audience that he has delved into the books and the series, implying his dedication to portray Geralt of Rivia faithfully on screen. However, it remains to be seen how his interpretation of Geralt’s voice will resonate, given the character’s unique, gravelly tone is a key aspect that an actor must emulate convincingly.

Henry Cavill, in his own words, crafted his Geralt voice by blending elements from previous portrayals (Doug Cockle’s in the games and Peter Kenny’s in the audiobooks). Yet, he aimed to add his unique touch to avoid feeling like a mere copy. As for Liam Hemsworth, details about his Geralt of Rivia performance are scarce since filming is ongoing. However, if he successfully captures the essence of the character on screen, he might win over skeptical fans.

Despite Liam Hemsworth’s portrayal of Geralt potentially surpassing Henry Cavill’s, The Witcher series still faces a steep uphill battle before it can win back its audience. With the daunting challenge of compressing three extensive books into just two seasons and resolving numerous original plotlines crafted for the show, it’s quite an arduous task.
