As a cinephile with decades of film-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that Ridley Scott’s decision to decline directing Top Gun: Maverick was both poignant and pragmatic. The emotional bond he shared with his late brother Tony, who directed the original Top Gun, was undoubtedly a significant factor in his decision.
Originally, the iconic director, Ridley Scott, was approached to helm “Top Gun: Maverick,” but he declined the offer due to a connection with his late brother, Tony Scott. While Ridley is renowned for his work in speculative fiction, Tony made a name for himself directing contemporary dramas, thrillers, and action films. Some of Tony’s directorial works include “Beverly Hills Cop II,” “Crimson Tide,” “True Romance,” and the original “Top Gun.” Given Tony’s involvement in the original film, it wasn’t surprising when Ridley was asked to direct the sequel. However, he chose to pass on the project due to its association with his brother.
As a devoted cinephile, I shared with The Hollywood Reporter that when they asked me to step into my brother’s shoes for ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ I politely declined. You see, I’ve always been drawn to the unexplored realms of science fiction, and my films have come to symbolize this genre over the years. While historical epics have also been a part of my journey, they are not the kind of stories that truly resonate with me creatively. In essence, I chose not to diverge from my preferred genre for ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’
As a cinephile with a penchant for historical dramas, speculative fiction, and science-fiction epics, I’ve always found myself drawn to those genres. However, the realm of fantasy has never truly captivated me in the same way – films such as Alien, Blade Runner, or Legend fall into this category and simply don’t resonate with my personal taste.
As it turned out, I was fortunate enough to be chosen as the director for Top Gun: Maverick. This film not only welcomed back Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer but also introduced a fresh, high-profile crew of Top Gun trainees, featuring Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Jay Ellis, and Manny Jacinto. Top Gun: Maverick, I’m proud to say, has been hailed as the best legacy sequel to date in an era where Hollywood is fixated on rekindling old and seemingly defunct franchises for quick profits. The film went on to win the Oscar for Best Sound, with five other nominations, including a nod for Best Picture.
‘Top Gun 3’ is in the Works
Initially, many didn’t foresee that “Top Gun: Maverick” would become such a blockbuster hit. Despite boasting an impressive ensemble of actors, movies that are sequels to established franchises often struggle to win over critics and audiences alike. However, the resounding success of “Maverick” has left viewers eager for even more high-octane thrills. Now, it’s official: Paramount is moving forward with “Top Gun 3,” and Tom Cruise and Glen Powell have been confirmed to reprise their roles.
This July, Powell shared an optimistic progress report on the upcoming sequel. Contrary to the long wait for the sequel of Maverick, which took 36 years, the third installment is expected to arrive more promptly. When inquired about the production timeline of the threequel, Powell confirmed, “I do have a set date.” However, when asked for additional details regarding the production or the storyline, he playfully declined, saying “definitely not.
It seems that Top Gun 3 might start filming relatively soon, given that Tom Cruise’s calendar is becoming less busy. The thrill-seeking actor made an appearance in the initial trailer for Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which, as its title hints, is thought to be the last installment of the series. Interestingly, while Maverick excels at piloting aircraft, Ethan Hunt isn’t quite so adept in this area, as Cruise’s major stunt for the film entails hanging upside down and plummeting from a plane thousands of feet above the ground.
