As a seasoned gamer of TV shows, I must confess that “9-1-1” has always been a rollercoaster ride of emotions for me – one that I eagerly hop on every week. The latest episode, titled “Hotshots,” was no exception; it served up another heaping plate of drama for our beloved Athena Grant-Nash (played by the phenomenal Angela Bassett).

Spoilers lie ahead for 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 7 of 9-1-1, “Hotshots.”

The eighth season of 9-1-1, scheduled for 2024, has been packed with intense challenges for its characters, both on a personal and professional level. Among them, Athena Grant-Nash has faced quite a bit in the early episodes, from a nerve-wracking plane emergency that kept viewers on the edge of their seats, to her recent struggles as a police sergeant. Showrunner Tim Minear recently shared insights about Angela Bassett’s reaction and also allayed concerns about Athena’s future in the show.

What Does Angela Bassett Thinks Of Athena’s Struggles?

It appears as if Athena keeps encountering hardships without letup. In the most recent installment titled “Hotshots,” the patrol sergeant was chasing a suspect and suffered a leg injury. Given everything Athena has experienced, from losing her fiancé, being attacked, getting involved in the cruise ship incident, surviving a house fire, and so much more, one could speculate that Angela Bassett might prefer not to portray a character with an unending stream of troubles and complexities. However, Minear revealed to TVLine exactly what the actress feels about the storylines, and it accurately reflects Athena’s nature: she welcomes these challenges as they align with her character’s essence.

Many actors strive to conceal any hint of vulnerability or human imperfection, but not Angela. Some have wondered if she would be comfortable with this storyline. My response was unequivocal: yes, absolutely. Contrary to rumors, I haven’t received a call from Angela Bassett asking us to reconsider the narrative that Athena is slowing down. Instead, she prefers roles that mirror real-life scenarios.

I personally prefer if Athena didn’t have continuous issues, but it seems the actress who plays her is unfazed by this. Frankly, we should anticipate such complex portrayals from an Oscar-nominated actress, known for her depiction of raw and vulnerable characters. Additionally, one might argue that Athena’s struggles add depth to engaging narratives.

Will Athena Retire From The Force?

‘Gina Torres, on 9-1-1: Lone Star, Speaks Up about Her Character’s Battle with Breast Cancer’. This version maintains the essence of the original while making it easier for readers to understand.

Although all the points discussed earlier, it’s not enjoyable to contemplate the possibility of Athena retiring soon. This thought lingered during the latest episode, as she seems less agile than before. Fortunately, Tim Minear stated in a recent interview that he hasn’t yet discussed retirement with Angela Bassett regarding her character. Intriguingly, the showrunner is actively looking forward to involving Athena in another undercover operation.

As the story unfolds across different seasons, it’s quite possible that some characters might hint at retiring or contemplating it. It’s almost unthinkable for Athena not to remain a police officer. For now, thankfully, we don’t have to ponder over such possibilities anytime soon.

9-1-1 is so unpredictable that a tornado involving bees transformed into an aircraft crisis. However, it’s comforting to know that Athena will continue to lend her assistance whenever needed for the time being. The fall finale of 9-1-1 airs this Thursday, November 21 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and can be streamed the following day with a Hulu subscription.
